We have spent a lot of time this week in booking flights to Oz. My advice is:-
1) No, you should not be paying £1000 for flight
2) Shop around. Take your best quote and inform other agents and ask them to beat it
3) "The Flight Centre" were really good this week, and gave us an email of the quote and held open for 2 days
4) Do NOT book with either "Flightcatchers.com" or "Brunei airlines" for many many reasons I will not go into

At the moment £1,000 looks about the going rate for April next year; on expedia, skyscanner and netflights. These things are usually consistent as it is the airline that sets the prices.
She could hang on and hope that someone has a sale, BA has them from time to time. Air Asia are supposed to be cheap, I just tried their website for the first time but couldn't get it to work.
