Both flights are same cost, and go as direct as you can.
is the extra travelling time worth it for the extra baggage??

Have you asked Malaysian Airlines if you can get extra baggage allowance?. I'd pay extra to keep the journey as short as possible, it's a killer is the flight. The first 6 hours are OK but then it's kind of boring (and I quite like flying!)

cant get the 40kgs as i do not have a pr visa, the 46kg per person is standard through flights to usa

In that case via the states.. you will probably need the extra baggage and 8 hours is not that bad..take a sleeping tablet, American airlines give more leg room i think as well

Yep, I'd go with that too. It has been said on here before that going via the states you get less jetlag.

Air New Zealand were fantastic when we came. We did have a 2 week stopover t break up the journey though...........

Our vert first trip to Oz was with Air New Zealand, with a stopover in LA for 4 days. Ever since, we have gone direct with Singapore (twice) and Emirates (once). We have had a stop over in Singapore once, and just waited for 5 hours at the airport the second time. That trip consisted of Adelaide to Singapore; Singapore to Heathrow; then Heathrow to Glasgow in one trip, and back to work the next day!
We we migrate for good later this year, we are flying with Singapore but with business tickets to get the extra baggage allowance. (using our airmiles for the upgrade). Otherwise, we would fly via the States for the extra allowance.

Singapore are great to fly with, especially their on demand entertainment system in economy. It was 8 years previous when we flew with Air New Zealand and although they were okay, not in the same league as Singapore or Emirates. All are better than American / Continental etc. Paul
