Default flight delays

hi
We are heading for Canberra hopefully late November. We are flying to Sydney and then need to book seperate flight to Canberra. Do we book the flights beforehand and risk missing it due to delays or do we wait till we land in Sydney and hope they can get us on a flight?

any advice appreciated

Book it now but allow yourself at least 3 hours in Sydney I would say before the Canberra flight. Could take you hours to get through immigration and customs. A travel agent would be able to advise you on the recommended time to allow at Sydney for transferring between an international and domestic flight.

When you book your flights, you can book to Canberra. The flights you are offered will then be tailored to this, and if you do miss your onward flight due to delays etc, then the airline will have to reschedule the flights for you. This happened to us when we went on holiday to the States, - as a result of problems with baggage in Toronto, we missed the onward connection. The airline simply put us on the next available flight. When we go to Sydney on Friday, we are flying via Seoul with an onward connection to SYD. If anything happens that we miss it, the airline will sort it (says she hopefully!)
Hope this helps. x

HI

We flew to Canberra in 2005. We booked our flights to Canberra as one ticket rather than 2 separate. Glad we did as we missed our connection due to clearing immigration. It was no hassle though. The airline just put us on the next flight which was about an hour later.

I did look at doing the flights separately but not worth the risk of missing your flight and the hassle to get it changed.

Just fly to Canberra and let the airline deal with the connection. You will have to clear customs in Sydney though and the onward flight will be a code share domestic carrier. For exampleif you fly Virgin Atlantic to Brisbane they fly to Sydney and then use Virgin Blue as the onward to Brisbane. Its given a Virgin flight code etc but if you miss the connection as others have said then the airline deals with it for you.

Dont just turn up and try to get a domestic flight. You could be disappointed or pay through the nose.

Right idea, however Virgin Atlantic do not fly to BNE. They do fly to SYD and you maybe able to get a Virgin Blue codeshare flight to Canberra, but I'm not sure if that is one of the routes that is in the codeshare agreement. You would have to speak to Virgin Atlantic in the UK or have a look on their website.
