The flies

My Greenwich Headwear hat has a fly net sewn into a storage compartment in the crown and is convertable from a bucket hat to one resembling this (the net unfolds over the hat brim to keep it off the face and ears):

Smashing little black hat and veil - will look a treat when I walk to the Post Office again - teamed with my black thongs, denim cut off jeans and skimpy halter neck top! Don't know why I didn't buy one earlier

I assume you mean a few miles inland from the extremities of Brisbane's western suburbs. That's a long way from me so I'm safe on a day to day basis
I was south of Toowoomba last weekend and noticed some of the little buggers about but no where near as bad as being described for Perth's fly season. Have never had a problem going camping west of Brisbane in the mountains or at the dams or in towns like Esk, Gatton or the like. Assume if you drive 500km out to places like Roma they would be worse.

Another very bad day was at Watson's bay in Sydney.

But surely they can't be that bad because who would choose to live in a country possessing flies of plague proportions?

I'm sure she'll stay where she is and then report there is less - which indicates it varies.
Here, we do get the occasional bad day where flies are everywhere - but they don't bother me - not being of the biting variety.
The rest of the time they are not an issue.
When I worked outback in NSW I would find my entire back carpeted with the buggers - again - didn't bother me because they did not bite. Nothing I could do as I needed 2 arms to drive the quad!
As for midges - different story!

Definitely! Surely an opportunity for an immigrant to see with fresh eyes the pressing need for fashionable ladies head attire which waves goodbye to the Australian Salute.
For entrée, it is tulle, not "floi-net", and can be shaped and embroidered to be most fetching.
A million brides can not all be wrong.

Fly-nets, a fashion faux pas?
