Fish n Chips!
Hi
Listen guys, I love a good fish supper and will SERIOUSLY miss this as I've heard that in Oz they don't do proper chips? Now, the thing is, I don't mind the different fish... but dodgy chips and no batter? Is this true? Correct me if I'm wrong but I'll really miss a good chippy! Please reassure me - PLEASE! George |

George You might have to master the art yourself...or eat so many before you go that you will NEVER want to see another chip again!!! |
Re: Fish n Chips!
In Glasgow they do a mean fried mars bar - don't suppose they do that in Oz then! Nae worries, but a bit worrying that the chips are a bit dodgy - Yeah, a good deep fat frier may be in order then! Cheers for the comments - guess I'll just have to adapt to dodgy chips. :)

Re: Fish n Chips!
I'm a fish and chip fan myself. :) I've had great fish and chips in Perth and Brisbane. If you like fish cakes, mushy peas and scraps you might be disappointed, as they don't appear to sell them!!!! The chips were definately not soggy!!! :D

George some chippies in the uk fry the chips differently, but fortunately Oz has a diverse cultural background and there should be a chippy you like, you just have to find it the old fashioned way and try them out. They do use batter, well at least the one's I went to did. Bye Mark (chipaholic) |
Re: Fish n Chips!
A lot of places do crumbed fish rather than batter, but you can get both. Fish cakes are a bit hard to find, and as for battereed sausages - they have this odd invnetion called a dagwood dog, which is a battered sausage on a stick, plastered with tomato sauce (which drips everywhere). Chips are generally brilliant.
Most fish and chip shops cook fresh too, so you have quite a wait (15 mins or so) but the food is all fresh. |

Bye Mark (chipaholic) I found a couple of good chippies in Oz, unfortunatly most of the shops serve up chips that resemble deep fried cardboard. They also do not put vinegar on chips, just salt. |

Re: Fish n Chips!
Yeah, the vinegar thing is annoying! Some shops have it, but very few, and you often get a funny look when asking for it. The Bloke didn't own any till I arrived!
They all offer salt, disgusting tasting ketchup and BBQ sauce, but rarely vinegar. How can you eat chips without it? (oooh sorry, that was a bit of a negative post there wans't it. Forgive me! ) |
Re: Fish n Chips!
The best fish and chips I’ve had was in Largs until I got here. Some of the fish is just magic, can’t say the same about the chips though. They use frozen chips. The nearest you can get is potato wedges; ask them not to use seasoning and hey presto!!!!
I’ve been lucky, I’ve found a wee shop across the road from my work willing to make me curry sauce and chips and chips and cheese. The first time I asked them was funny though. The shocked look on their faces was great. I’m still working on the pizza crunch (deep fried battered) though. Everyone I work with thought I was mad at first, but they now nip over to the wee shop for the same. However, everyone reminds me that I will die soon with my diet, which is nice of them. :D soapy |
Re: Fish n Chips!
Being an Aussie, I loved the F & C everywhere I got them (and there was always vinegar ;) ). On the other hand, when I was in Northern Ireland, I did not like the F & C there. SO I guess we all get used to it one way, then when you try it elsewhere, it takes a bit of adjusting. Now being in USA I would kill for some of those F & C from NI :D
Cheers |
Re: Fish n Chips!
The fish&chip shop is often a fishmongers, so you can have any fish you like battered, crumbed or grilled. The chips are with salt or chicken salt (not sure what the latter contains). We take the whole lot home so that husband can have vinegar and I can have mayo with my chips.
There's bound to be something around that you like - except if you like mushy peas on everything......... |

I love fish. All types. My favourite way of cooking many fish is foil wrapped with lemon and ginger in the oven.....yum...slurp.... :)

Re: Fish n Chips!
What I won't give for Harry Ramsdens fish and chips. We have searched for six months and the 'best' fish and chips (our opinion) are from 'Charis' in Labrador on the Gold Coast - really light crispy batter and the fish is not watery. Closest thing to HR. One thing to note is don't ask for 'cod' its not cod as we know it - it awful. Baramundi is the best fish available (again my opinion).
Anybody in Yorkshire have a haddock and chips with scraps for me. This is not a whinge, I have resigned myself to lots of visits to the Gold Coast - all positives. |

You sound terrified of getting a negative response! Not from me mate! :) What does Barramundi taste like? I've heard lots of people rave about it. |

Re: Fish n Chips!
Theres loads of good chippies and bad chippies in Perth, just like the UK.
Some even sell all that crap that gives the Scottish the top spot in the world heart disease ladder - fried mars bars, haggis, white and black pudding etc. I've found the best chippies are those run by "wogs". But on two occasions good chippies have turned crap on being taken over by poms and the portions turned microscopic overnight. |

What does Barramundi taste like? I've heard lots of people rave about it. I thinks that is its secret, it dosn't have a 'taste', well not a strong one anyway. Its a firm fish, quite dry and always fresh because its fished in abundance. Give it a go, battered or grilled its great. |

Hi guys,
would love to know what you think of the old potato cake, i craved them after a few beers when in UK, YUM!!!! I like it that you can get the option of grilled fish over here as well, is usually nice, and the cod is generally smoked cod, not the cod as you know it. X |

Re: Fish n Chips!
Personally I'm glad the temptation has been removed (we had several chippy's close by in Newcastle). I am eating alot healthier out here and feel alot lot better for it and can get back into all my summer stuff - yippeee!!!
Once in a while will try out the recommendations in Perth, but for me, once we start to explore, a good Ruby Murry is what I'm after, gonna be trying out 'Nine Mary's or Chutney Mary's' can't remember the name  For me this has been about a lifestyle change, which has included my food intake. I have alot more time to cook now, so don't rely on 'junk food' so much - don't need the comfort foods now, as I'm not totally knackered after spending 5 hours in a car each day :D But good luck to all those who seek the holy grail................ Jill  |
