O.K so you will probably not live in the city itself but it is a very nice city. We stayed there for a week and loved it and felt very safe with a 3 and 5 year old.
No disrespect but 1 week is not long anywhere and you will not gage an area in that time so just enjoy it and don`t spend too much time looking at houses e.t.c as this can easily be done on the internet.
Definitely visit Cottesloe beach and Hilarys as they are big recreational places in the northern suburbs.

Whilst in Perth I would definately visit Rottnest island, we loved it there. Hire bikes and catch the ferry from Hilarys. We had a brill day.

Brisbane :-
With kids that age maybe a day at one of the Theme Parks, Warner Movie World perhaps on the Gold Coast or Dreamworld. If times limited then would probably suggest just Movie World. Whilst there its kinda obligatory to have a look at Surfers Paradise beach which is fantastic even if skyscraper Miami'esk tower blocks are not your thing.
Southbank is worth a stroll around on a Sunday or any other market day.
If going to Australia Zoo then whilst heading up the Shineshine Coast on the way back drive through Melaney and Montville. Very scenic mountainish land and really nice place to stop for something to eat on the way back in.
Noosa is worth a nose at being the upmarket holiday area and the beach is very nice there and noosa north shore is fantastic.
Maybe consider a fishing trip, weather permitting from any of the major marinas such as Manley etc.
Above all - have lots of fun!
