Re: First OZ Job interview
Originally posted by karawara88 There are currently vacancies going for child protection workers you have to complete an individual application for each post all spread out across WA. For one I don't have the inclination to complete 8 application forms and although salary by Oz standards is reasonable, accepting a post places us in the position of settling where employment is offered not necessarily an area of choice. Also its not really the sort of job to dip in and out of and it needs some commitment in time, which I am not necessarily ready to give at the moment especially in an area where we may not really want to live. If I had beenoffered an interview for the post I did apply for, which I should have been having met all the essential criteria then I may have felt differently as it is I feel if they don't want to meet me then I am not going to keep repeating myself for lesser jobs. I think well if the system still works like that they could have a look at me, in UK I am considered quite a catch, in OZ struggling to get on the employment ladder. Donna Why is it a surprise that you have to complete an individual application for each job? If you dont have the inclination to do this, how do you expect to get a job? You also stated that it is not the sort of job to dip in and out of & you are not ready to commit time in an area you dont want to live. I think you are expecting too much to come to you. Whoever you are and whatever your qualifications, the only way that any employer is going to take you on is if you apply, and show some commitment. Jobs may not be easy to come by in Perth but be a bit realistic about your efforts to find work. Tony C |
Re: First OZ Job interview
To those who can't use UK references, just try and do temping work for Australian friends - even unpaid - I did this - and now I have references on tap.
It all paid off - because I got a paid job on the back of that - and another reference... I suppose it will then snowball. Badge |
Good tip Badger - I've got some friends down in Tassie who will give personal references as well, no harm in putting them down on the Resume, (especially if they have impressive job titles!).
Can anyone tell me now - jobs where you have to apply by answering specific selection criteria (like govt jobs) - Is it best to write each one as a short essay, or are bullet points acceptable? and do Aussie employers prefer the selection criteria typed or handwritten - assuming its not specified on the information sheet. Thanks (first application coming up. Eeek!) Pollyana |

You have to read my posts in context, my posts have been brief but I have already completed a very detailed application for a position with a government dept. and as I clearly met all criteria I should have at least been offered an interview. I have not expressed any surprise at needingto complete different applications for different positons, although these are all for the same department, I personally do not wish to complete 8 different application forms plus CV etc for the same job in eight different areas across WA partly because I do not know what area I want to live in and do not know many of the areas that have been identified. I have completed at least three job applications for other positions each week I have been here. I also search new job positions daily, so do not make any presumptions about effort. I have merely detailed my experiences so far. As far as expectations are concerned I expect that if as an applicant I meet the essential criteria for a position that I am offered an interview otherwise why have a selection process. Other than that I have not detailed any expectation and I do not consider the one that I have as too high. I would not presume to judge you on your methods of employment as per your recent post and I would expect the same courtesy in return. If that is not too high an expectation ;) Donna |
