Default Finding a Primary School

I am just wondering how people went about finding schools when they moved over to Oz. We know which town we will be living in and there seems to be lots of school to choose from. As we will be looking for a house at the same time I am hoping it will be possible to find a suitable school then find a rental in the catchment area.

We are going for a 'look see' trip in a couple of weeks and I would like to set up some tours of some of the schools in the areas we are most likely to be living.

I am just wondering how others did it? Did you visit lots of schools then pick the one was most suitable for your kids? or is this not the way its done? did you just go through the local authority who designate a school. Are places limited over subscribed like UK schools?

The myschool website makes interesting reading on all the schools in each area.

The schools have catchment areas and if you want your child to go to a particular government school and can find a place in the catchment area then the school is obliged to take them. You are probably wiser to go with the house first as the catchment area usually reflects the nature of the neighbourhood.
