Default Finding an IT job in Perth

Hi folks,

firstly this site is great! I'm finding out so much info about Oz, and it's stirring up my passion about the place so I can't wait until I make my move. The plan is to go to Perth early next year on a skilled permanent residancy visa, I have family there so it makes sense to at least start there. The visa's not through yet, we're just about to send away the police checks so shouldn't be long now.

I currently work as an Network and Information Systems Manager in Scotland. I have an MCSE (2000) and CCNA. I've been hearing that most folks are finding it difficult to get into IT in Oz because the're hiring Australians first. This worries me. From what I do and what I've got can anyone cheer me up and tell me I've got a chance?

Here's some other questions I have...
Do you think it would be useful to send away my CV before we get there?
Is there any jobsites that show salary? (Seek never seems to) Or is this the way Oz works, do I negotiate salary in the interview?
I've seen website showing salaries in certain fields, r any of you doing what I do and if you don't mind can you tell me what you earn?

thanks
Dave

Hi Dave

Firstly good luck on your venture. I haven't found so far any instance where Ozzies are hiring their own first. I am a SAP specialist in Basis and although I have six years experience in this I am finding it difficult to land the job that I want. I also want to go to Perth, I have my parent's there and have accomodation sorted. I need to sell my house in the UK but wanted a job before I went. My wife said that she would give up her job and sell the house allowing me to take up a job first.

I have had two promises of interviews and thus far have not succeeded getting one interview. The second interview was destined for Monday or Tuesday but had a call on Tuesday a.m from the agency saying that they had changed the job role. I too am getting frustrated with this situation but I will percevere wit this as I am sure all will be well in the end.

Hi Martin,

what agencies r u using? Do you have your Visa? Maybe you'll find it easier once you move out there. Sounds like you have an understanding wife, good on her for offering to stay and sell the house. Good luck and keep us updated.

Hi Dave

I am using seek and jobserve. If you look at these both you can find that they both are listing the same vacancies. Yes I do have my visa this was granted on 27.09. As for the wife yes she is understanding, thankfully. If all goes well we hope to be out there by January for when the kids start school.

Hello, I'm a PM / SDM working for IBM at the mo - I've got a Master's, ITIL and 10 yrs experience but couldn't get an interview or even an acknowledgement when I first started applying. We won't arrive in Melbourne until late Nov and I was basically told forget applying until a) you have your Visa and b) you're in the country.

May not be true for everyone but thought I'd share that with you.

Finally, good luck with everything - I'm a great believer that tough times are there for getting through; in the end things nearly always work out just not quite how you expect!

Cheers

Matt

Hubby has just started a new job. He is supposed to be leading a team of over 40 developers but as yet they have only employed 15 and are continually advertising, due to not being able to find the right people with the skills needed. He will be involved in the recruitment drive as well as heading up the team and of course remembers what it's like for a new Pom coming over looking for work, he was in the same boat 4 years ago.

He is working on a major international project with a multi-national company. Skills required include C++ and Java. Please PM me with your email address if you are coming to Perth and would like him to consider you. I can't give out further details on this thread obviously, but if you've got the skills and want to be put in touch, I'll see what I can do for you.

Hi...

I work as an IT Project Manager in Perth (have been here almost 2 years now) if you want to send me a PM with your email address I am happy to send you a list of agencies and contact names and numbers that I have used to recruit people where I work. You should also PM Steve99 as he works in the IT recruitment industry in Perth and I know he is always on the look out for people, especially anyone with SAP experience as the big resource companies seem to all be using it.

Cheers

Hi,

I've just moved out from the UK to Sydney on a Work Visa. I applied from the UK and was interviewed by phone and 6 weeks later here I am. There definitely is scope to get into IT. The office I am working in has many nationalities (including lots of Brits). So there doesn't seem to be much evidence of trying to only hire Australians.

I'd love to send you a copy of my CV as I'm a C++ programmer heading out to perth in the new year, but your private message storage has reached it's limit so I cant PM you. If you could clear some space or PM me with your e-mail address I'd be keen to send you my CV.

Thanks

Does anyone know if it's possible to actually get employer sponsorship for IT jobs in Australia? My OH has over 10 years experience in IT and is expert in ASP.NET, SQL Server, VB.NET, C#,....the list goes on. He has a MSc, MCSD, and qualified in Siebel. Like a few other posters, he has been looking at the recruitment sites, Seek, Monster, and although there seems to be plenty of jobs, most of them seem to say only people with the right to work in Australia need apply. He is just short of the points for the 136 skilled independent and gets no points for me (housewife and mother, god knows they should make you study for that....if I knew then, what I know now!!!). Looks like he will be applying for the 134 skill matching which requires state or employer nomination. Any advice appreciated (other than him ditching me and marrying some aussie babe!)
Thanks

Rubbish, rubbish, rubbish! Anyone who thinks that just wasn't good enough for the job. It took me about 5 weeks to find work in Perth, at a quiet time of year too(middle of the summer holidays) If you have PR, TFN etc etc and you are good enough for the job, you'll get it. There are so many non-Australians in IT in Perth that you are more of an oddity if you ARE Australian!

Good luck!

Agree, my husband has worked with people from all around the world, and here in Perth you'll find a higher number of Asians in particular.

Inbox has now been emptied, sorry to those trying to PM me!

Hi...

I know quite a lot of people who get sponsored on a 457 visa by their employers, this can even be an IT agency if there is a particular need for the skills your husband has. PM me and I am happy to give you the names of a couple of companies that may be worth contacting.

Cheers

I have to agree with the remark about hiring Australians first. I think this is simply a myth. I had a lot of recruiters contact me and I never felt that my nationality played any part in any progression. I had two interviews, was offered both roles and also turned down another 2-3 interviews and this was all within two weeks of starting my job-hunt.

My experience seems to indicate that employers are only interested in what you are "bringing to the table".
