Default Financial Services in Australia

Can anyone tell me what the financial services industry is like outside of Sydney? Are there many opportunities in Brisbane and Melbourne?

My partner works in credit risk projects in banking and I work in compliance at an insurance company. I'm originally from Brisbane and would love to head back there, however I don't know how realistic it is work wise. I went to London a year after leaving uni, so the majority of my working life has been spent here. I'm a little out of touch. Thanks!

The banks have a good presence in Melbourne, but I think insurance is more Sydney centric.

Brisbane has one or two large financial services organisations up there, but of course you would limit your market. On the other hand, I have found that London financial services experiences is extremely highly regarded and you could get snapped up in Brisbane.

I believe there are risk projects going on in CBA in Sydney I've been approached to move back over to work on them so there is work although it may be market risk as well. Apparently risk systems in Australian banks are not too hot I've heard stories about what's on their books that would make their CEO's sweat.

Maybe they could learn a thing or two from their well-run UK and US counterparts?

Thanks for the advice guys, very useful info. I'm sure we will sort ourselves out regardless of where we end up. Recruitment agencies are a bit useless unless you are ready there and then to be placed, so I think we will have to keep our eyes and ears open!

Before my OH got into banking he was working for a mining company on a few projects, so that is also an option.
