Default financial advise

Do most people use a financial advisor when they make this move or are things pretty straight forward.
We know a fair amount ourselves but is it a complicated affair that need specialist guidance?

It all depends on how complicated your situation is. If you have pension funds then I would take advice from someone like Alan Collett who understands the complexities of both systems and how they interelate.

Another complex area is whether to sell the house or keep it and rent it out. Peps, ISAs and funds are another area where sound advice could save you money.

If it just a transfer of funds from house sale, savings etc it is straightforward and can be arranged through the likes of the Commonwealth Bank in London who will open account(s) for you and transfer the funds in A$ at the exchange rate at the time.

Other things such as taking out forward exchange rate contracts (hedging), transferring company pensions, tax issues etc can get very complicated and you may need the help of a financial expert. Alan Collett from Go Matilda seems to get rave reviews on this forum and there is a lot of information on his website.

One thing I would suggest if you haven't done it already is doing some searches on this forum - pensions, financial advice etc - you will pick up a lot from this and can then decide if you need further help. You'll probably get more out of the immigration forum than the lifestyle and culture forum but try both.

Good luck!
