Hello

We're not in perth, but not too far from there.
We have been in Bunbury for around 9 mths and i can honestly say
its the best decision we have ever made.
Ok we don't have our own home yet but we are prepared to rent for a bit
longer and see if the house prices come down or at least stop rising.
We were looking for a different life not necessarily a better life, and so far we haven't been disappointed.

I love living in Perth. It has often been said that those that like pubs/clubs/shopping and the like, live in big cities or have access to big cities back in UK will more than likely find perth a social backwater. I hate pubs, hate clubs even more and well shopping is my idea of a nightmare so perth suits me down to the ground. I enjoy socialising in the confines of my own home, I enjoy driving around with not many traffic jams. I enjoy the fact my husband doesn't have work away from home or have long train journeys home and the fact we all eat together as a family every night. I love my house and pool. In fact there is nothing about Perth I don't like apart from the people that don't like Perth

only been in Mandurah 3 weeks and so far so good, I love Perth too, shopping isn't that brilliant for a city centre but there are big department stores if that's what you want, I prefer Carousel and Garden City myself - haven't been to the latter for ages - 2 years I think so will have to go there.

Beaches are great.

every single person I have met has been friendly and helpful, even the checkout girls look a 1000 times happier than the staff in my old Tesco (well it was Slough so that could explain it).

most of all my children love it and that makes me happy.

oh and we love Kings Park

I love it here. Yes the house prices have gone up hugely, but we still have much much more in the way of property than we ever could have imagined in the UK. We bought as soon as we arrived 7 months ago and I have parrots, redcaps, gallahs, kookaburrahs all coming into my back garden daily. It has been the school holidays and my son has been to surf classes where they were joined by dolphins. He has been on camp and there were kangaroos at the camp and a possom with a baby on her back. I see my hubby every weekend instead of him working and we take a walk along the beach and have a coffee on the foreshore as a saturday morning ritual.

Yep, Perth is great

Hi there,

I guess being that I am the originator of the 'Feeling Low in Perth' thread, I should explain a little so that you are not put off.

Everyone, but everyone, goes through a feeling, all probably to do with seratonin and all that medical chemical mumbo jumbo, where they well....feel a bit low....not that they hate it, not that they want to go home even...unexplained....my post was asking simply if it was normal...which everyone said it was. I just didnt know what the hell it was, I had everything I wanted here (well a few inconveniences like not being able to get a pint of milk and not having corner shops, or supermarkets open until late).

Anyway, something I realised was I used to work abroad all the time, travelling with projects when I lived in London....I was asked to go away for a week on a project and I really didnt want to go.....I knew at that point that I loved where I lived...whereas I didnt when I was in London.

Two weeks since I posted that note and now I feel more at home here than I ever have. I was asked by the head of our Melbourne office if I would consider moving to their office as my career is doing so well in the six weeks of being here...I said absolutely not, for all its faults, I do love Perth.

Plus points:

Weather is great most of the time, although you do quickly take for granted sitting outside having lunch in a nice restaurant at lunchtime

Service is amazing in shops, even cheap ones

The beach is so close even when you live in the city (as I do...well City West anyway)

Basically Perth is a place some people love and a lot of people hate with passion....you really just have to come with an open mind. Its different tot he rest of Oz, often people who travel hate the Perth bit as they have been to the others....I personally love it

Yes I had a kookhuburrah in the tree the other day...thought about that song at the time.......plus yes Kings Park full of parrots....Kings Park, another reason.......the restaurants......lovely little restaurants on little side roads.......the amount of outdoor sports you can do if you want to and yes......went up Swan River on some naff boat cruise and dolphins followed us........Great fish and chips (yep........better than the Brit ones).....

Oh and the best of all....fillet steak......the only food other than lamb to be muchus cheapier than the UK. So if you love your great quality fillet steak, lamb fillet of the same chunk with no fat or bone for about a third of the UK....you are in the right place.

Cant wait to get surfing lessons, cant wait to scuba dive on demand and on a hot sunny day...just that short crossing from the bell tower over to south perth......well coming back from south perth really is just breaktaking

Don't take it personally Amanda. You weren't complaining about the place just about how isolated you felt. The first thing I thought was OMG, we will go through the same feelings and is best to know what to expect. Can't wait to be over there and when we do we can meet up for drinks. Loads of them LOL
You seem alot happier now. Good for you.
Hope you keep smiling!!

Oh no, please don't think that.
Just wanted to let you know that I found your thread informative as all newbies (i imagine) come over with rose coloured glasses. I was expecting it to be hard but reading what you had to say opened my eyes to what its going to really be like. I will be moving with OH and kids and know I am gonna have to the strong minded one, you know, "we have done the right thing, trust me" bit. But looking forward to all the excitement of a new place and new people.
Will definately come to perth for meet ups as I think being around others in the same situation must help a great deal.
Until I am there Amanda, have a drink for us, because once we arrive I may just drink the the place dry

Yes its odd, as everyone back home who had travelled to Oz hadnt come to Perth....so they had tales of how amazing it was and how you walked into any bar and everyone was so friendly...it isnt quite the same here, very different culture.....its much more laid back but people do tend to come and say hi, just not as much as maybe in other places.

Then a lot of people said they hated Perth.......but I absolutely love it.........you can get anywhere really in next to no time...although you work your bottom off here work wise you are home in about ten minutes instead of two hours.

Put it in perspective, which I needed to do myself....I have a huge 2 bedroomed apartment, two en suites in a beautiful med looking apartment block tucked away in a corner but 30 seconds outside of a train station that takes 1 min to get to the city, 10 mins to get to the beach, I dont hear trains....I have a beautiful pool (big one) with a waterfall into it, a hot tub, a gym, a sauna all in my apartment block which is a small block of 47 apartments........its stunning, I am sitting outside on my balcony now with a glass of wine with the sound of the waterfall running into my pool.

Could you do that in the UK?

My apartment costs me the equivalent of 750 pounds per month, in London I had a dull 2 bed terrace house in Ealing that was far from special for twice that

Its just appreciating those things you have to get your head around.....as you actually forget they exist...that you could be sitting with the glass of wine in your hot tub or having a swim in your pool
