Default Fat Politics

Theres been talk recently of imposing a tax on 'fatty' foods in the UK
in an attempt to tackle the growing problem of obesity.

Now how about
this? Why not make obese people pay for their baggage instead of giving
them an allowance?

Discuss... :)

True! That is something I can't understand. The airline makes a big fuss
if your baggage is 2 kilos overweight, but you can't make them
understand that they would do nothing if I was 2 kilos heavier than I am
now.

They should in fact include your body weight as part of the total
baggage allowance. That means that the ones being overweight will have
to pay, pay, pay :D At least it will guarantee that the one sitting next
to you on the plane is not occupying half of your seat!

I totally agree. it
would make for some amusement at check-in too - people trying to skip
off a few kilos to escape being charged.

Some airlines have insisted
that obese people pay for two seats.

Usually they just end up sitting
next to or in front of me:(

I think "Fat Tax" is a great idea, and agree that you should include
bodyweight and baggage as one allowance!

Interesting Ned...

I've heard
this discussion numerous times. Debaters have even gone as far to say
pay extra for NHS useage (weight = diabetes etc etc, more strain on
health services) and pay for bigger clothes sizes. Isn't a size 12 the
same price as a size 18 for example? Surely it costs more to make a size
18 as there is more material. So lighter people are subsidising larger
people's clothes?

Now I'm not going to join this debate as I am to
poltically correct, just leaving food for thought!!

Well thats just
no on IMHO. The airlines should crate these fat buggers up and put them
in the hold.

Few airlines give allowances for SCUBA gear yet will for golf stuff, and
then you get the people with bigger hand luggage than my luggage that
went in the hold.

While your at it, people should not allowed on board
if they can't wash and put a bit of deoderant on. Especially when they
wear sleeveless tops and keep raising their arms. Not nice for a long
flight as experienced last year

Hey Walaj

Don't mind that as long as the
drink is free. Just get comatosed!! Then everyone looks the same.

Oops
said I wasn't gonna join this debate

Interesting. Are you suggesting that the
obese should be jet washed and dowsed in Right Guard before being
allowed to board?

But where would you draw the
line? ???

Smokers and drinkers need extra NHS usage

What about drug
takers?

Although I agree in principle with a "fat tax" I dont see why
overweight people should have to pay more for the NHS.

Those of use
that pay NI and income tax pay enough already, and those that dont pay
anything wouldnt be able to pay for the extra usage anyway...

IMHO this
country needs to make sport more affordable and available - we have
local tennis courts but you can only play between 9am and 5pm Mon-Fri
(when most people are at work)!

Erm, yes, but just spare a thought for those people who really have no
choice with their size for medical reasons. Think that could be included
as discrimination.....

Not
everyone can help being overweight though, although I agree some people
are guilty of doing the above!

(not me, I might add!)

Actually take some offence at that. I have hypothyroidism which, yes,
is a hormonal complaint where the thyroid gland doesn't work. As a
result, I have no metabolism at all - I simply don't burn fat. If I ate
nothing, I still wouldn't lose weight - I'd fall into a coma first.

I'm
not overweight, my condition is managed. But it took me several years to
diagnose and there are many, many people out there who suffer from
similar complaints and cannot do anything about it.

Just spare a
thought, that's all I'm saying. Don't tar everyone with the same brush.
