Exclamation Export Car To Oz

Has anyone exported their car to Australia following emigration?

I'm getting conflicting info. Some say its taxed others say you can bring in ONE car only (and only shipping/insurance costs apply).
Which is correct?

Can anyone help?

I have a rather nice SLK which I really want to keep but not if I have to pay 1/2 its value again in tax

Anyone who has exported their car, can you give me ACTUAL INFO please?

Thanks in advance.

Look at the link for Karman Shipping on www.movingdownunder.co.uk/files/motoring.php

I looked into taking my Celica Convertible and it just was not worth it.

Your Merc will not be Oz spec and when you come to sell the dealers will not want to know. Bit like Jap imports over here.

k,
thanks for the link but it is just as confusing.
It states:
Australian Import Taxes on most cars are 15% Duty and 10% Gst.

Yet I have heard this does not apply if emigrating with ONE car.

Have you actually exported a car? Has anyone?
Does anyone ACTUALLY KNOW the costs?

Have you tried Australian customs site ? http://www.customs.gov.au

As far as I am aware there is no concession for one car. The general consensus appears to be, unless you are attached to your car or its unique, Its not worth taking it.

Do a search on car import on this forum and you will find most say the same thing.

Hope,
I have a very nice Audi A4 Convertible (replacement cost in Oz is hair raising!) and with all the taxes the cost worked out at c £7k!!
The Aussie tax system leaves a lot to be desired. However as we want to live there then just have to accept it with a smile and a tinne!

With the low petrol prices I'm just going to find myself a stonkin great V8!!

:-0

I just don't agree with this.

Lets say you have a Rolex. Do you pay Tax+GST+LST on that too?
The principal is the same.
On both, tax has already been paid. They are MY possessions.

This is just legalised robbery.

Welcome to Australia. ! The buggers start to rip you off as soon as you apply for migration pack.

Import Tax + GST + Luxury Car tax?
+ shipping + Steam cleaning & inspection + any other tax they can think of on the day.

Worse still you have to pay for an inspection when you sell it on.

Them's the rules!
If you don't pay you don't play!

It's taken me a while to accept them but we have no choice.

What's worse is the cost of European cars in Oz AND the P*$$ poor specs v UK.

Now something to really get your back up is ISAs, PEPS, and private pensions. Tax (Aussie rate) on any growth each year AND NO tax relief if they go down!!

Add to that the £v$ exchange rate and Pommie Bstd could be right. It ain't milk and honey! But it's where we want to go!

Dinky

P.S. The have a great line in late 60's Mustangs in Oz I fancy a red convertible with cream leather and they're cheap!! Bring on the V8's!

Oh yes very nice, I was nearly tempted by a 1966 Ford Thurnderbird while I was there last time, it was immaculate and cheap as chips.

The other problem ,you might have is getting some one who knows how to load ,a car into a 40ft container with out damaging, our tally into our depot this month alone,1/citroen, container not bulkheaded off properly, consquently cartons fell on to bonnet,2/beautifully restored 1968 mini cooper [some ones pride and joy] not tied down correctly, smashed spotlight, and cable rubbing on paint work, is it all worth it ,we find it quite amusing when these ex-pats bring in their shiney "beamers " only to find they could have bought the same thing for less up the road , and saved all the hassle...........MM

Hmm. Life 'n cars ain't fair. I had a great car a way back (Audi 200 Turbo if anyone remembers), 3 years old (not me, I was 25), and in the UK Glass's had it at about GBP32K. Where I was living abroad it cost GBP4K, nothing funny, ie condition was normal etc. There was simply no market for second hand cars. (There would however have been a drop of value in UK because it was LHD.)

Was it worth importing to UK and making a killing? No. Checked everything out, best chance was to break even or make a dollar or two.

Cheers - Don
