Hi
We moved to Chapel Hill in Brisbane just over 3 weeks ago from the uk. This idea of swapping babysitting favours is a great idea and a great way to meet new people. If anyone lives close or is willing to travel to meet for coffee that would be great too. My boys are aged 6 and nearly 4.

Ok...now we have quite a few 'local' people interested in the Babysitting Circle perhaps we could all arrange to meet in a park/beach so we can chat and get to know each other and the children can play together. Probably best to get Christmas/New Year out of the way but maybe sometime in Jan when the 'dust has settled'??

Great idea! I've just started to think that we might be able to get something organized :D

I'm sure we're all going to be busy over Christmas, so early in the new year is good for us. Shall we start a rough list of names?

Bayside Area:
comet555 (Capalaba) - girl aged 4, boy almost 1.5 years
Shortlets (Wynum or Manly??) - 4 kids, including teenagers
Stitch (soon to be Wellington Point) - one boy, one girl
yorksinoz (Cleveland) - girl aged 2 and a bit
ormrod 7 (Victoria Point??) -
rebnatoli (Thornlands) -

Gold Coast:
moneypen20
thebaggos (Robina) - girls 4,8 & 9
cyrused (upper Coomera) - boys nearly 2 and 6

Just a rough list to start out. If anyone wants to add/change anything just copy it and fix it up in your new post.

Just realised 'will sit for alcohol' does not exactly scream responsibility ....

but oh well. I'll never buy it myself XD

For those of us in the Bayside area (there seem to be quite a few who have posted on this thread) who have said they'd be happy to be part of a babysitting circle.... shall we arrange a meet-up in the new year to all meet each other, swap details, decide how the system will work etc?? Might be easiest that way, rather than trying to do it all via PMs? If people are up for that, then I'll start a separate thread in the meet-ups section.

Oops... just realised that this has been suggested already... silly me for not reading all the most recent posts!!

Just a gentle word guys - which I'm sure isn't necessary, but I have had a few concerns voiced to me - keep your sensible heads on when posting the details of the kids, and be careful who you leave them with. I think this is a great idea you've got going, but would hate to see anyone unscrupulous getting hold of too many of your details.
Hope you can see what I mean.....:)

I get the warnings, but I think we can all agree that we need to be cautious.

It does annoy me slightly that other people might think I would pass off my kids to total strangers! I don't think any of us intend to do that. Obviously we will all meet, get to know each other and then only babysit if and when we're comfortable.

We pretty much know hardly anyone here, so for me to find a babysitter I'd basically be picking up the phonebook or calling an agency. Then they'd give me a total stranger that I'd have to check out. At least this way I can meet other moms in the same situation and get to know them a bit more first. I've already met some of these ladies so it's not as though they're all strangers.

So, yes there's a need to be careful. And no I won't be telling anyone where we live and what time my house will be empty, etc. But I think we could all safely meet at a park like the other expat meets. Then, we can take it from there.

Pollyana..... good job though, nothing wrong with cautioning us to be cautious :D

To everyone else:
Can we consider ourselves warned, and we can take care of ourselves from now on?

Agreed!! I don't think any of us would be stupid enough to post any more specific details of our children/homes than we have already... that's why we have already posted about meeting up first!!

Just created a new thread for a Bayside babystitting circle meetup:
http://britishexpats.com/forum/showt...27#post5683827

I'll leave the Gold Coast & Brisbane people to start their own thread when the time comes.

Its more that I just have to be fair to a couple of posters that had concerns - they preferred not to post on here themselves, so I said I'd just stick my nose in! It's good to feel that we all have an eye out for each other after all.

As I said I'm sure that you are all sensible enough to know what you are up to, and its a great way of getting to know people and of getting new friends for the children as well. Please don't take my post as a criticism in any way, as its not meant like that at all :) Its a great idea and I hope it takes off really well :)

And now, as I don't have kids and so really can't be of much help to a babysitting circle, I'll let you guys get on with it. Last time I was left in charge of 2 kids they shut me in a cupboard and ran off with the key during a game of hide and seek, so you're certainly better off without me! Fortunately their mum was only working in the next room and heard the two of them debating how long to leave me there for :D

That's all right Haley. I don't think anyone can assume I was or wasn't interested from my earlier drivel... As I said, I've met all but one of the bayside posters on this thread and I know I can trust you lot.
