Lot's of things in play with this
US Fed saying that they may raise interest rates sooner rather than later - AUD drops
Turmoil over referendum is driving down GBP. If a yes vote expect this to get worse (or better depending on your position). If no expect some problems but not as bad if no. Still GBP heading down for a while

You'd have to become a quick study on economics and how the stock exchange works to get any insight into what affects the strength of a currency.
They say that the UK was so effected by the GFC due to it primarily being a service industry and when no-one has the money to buy services then businesses suffer. Oz, however, had it's mining backbone to rely upon cos if you want electricity in China then you need coal
Many other factors but they seemed to be the main reasons from what I'd read.
