hi...i'll be heading to melbourne next september (God willing) so i'm just wondering what money shall i prepare to take with me...given that we are a couple and assuming that i won't be able to find work for 3 months (hope not to be more than that )
so can anyone who faced the same situation can tell me roughly speaking what will be the living cost per month for basic needs like food, petrol, rental ... ?

Please bring atleast 10,000 after all expenses such as tickets etc are paid. It is a very subjective question but this is for very basic lifestyle, does not inlcude any cars, trips to casino or booze or playing lotto etc. Only food and basic accomodation etc

thx for ur reply, yeah that's what i was asking about.... enough fund for basic living requirments, i think if i'm unemployed i won't be hitting clubs & casinos or boozing too much

I honestly don't think $10k will be enough for 3 months in Melbourne. It's going to take at least $1500 for a deposit on a rental, furniture to go in it, food, mobile phones, etc. We quite easily went through much more than $10k when we arrived 4 years ago and I'm pretty sure the cost of living has gone up substantially since then.

I moved from G.C to Melbourne in late January and have been living in North Melb approximately 4ish months in a very studentish like standard (minus the alcohol) Similar to what the previous poster said, rental bond, and first month rent will chew out minimum $1800 - $2000. Transportation fees, mobiles, mobile credit, food, internet, definitely bring an absolute minimum of $10,000. If you're going to be buying a car here, plan to bring over minimum $15,000...
