Victoria do not currently charge temp visa holders fees for public schools. This might change though! It did in WA and was applies to people who already had visas.
Schools are not as free as in the UK though, most have some admin fees and you have to provide books and equipment.

That’s great thank you! I really hope it doesn’t change as I’ve done all my budgeting plans .
Do you happen to know if we will need separate heath insurance ?

You will initially to get the visa, after that if you are from the UK you will get reciprocal Medicare to cover any necessary treatment. Still may not be free though pay at point of treatment is the way here and Medicare refunds part or sometimes all of the cost. The Medicare website has more information.

Mandatory costs are somewhat higher in high-school years (7-12), but not dramatically so (though you'll probably have to start afresh with the uniform). However the range of optional extra student activities increases at this level--your call as to what's important.
Private schools are a whole different ballgame, generally involving much higher tuition and other sundry costs.
