Booked flights for 14th Jan.
Searched and researched on the forum on the different airlines until my head was spinning.
Then booked the cheapest.

Does anyone know for sure if you get the 40 kg allowance?
Does the 2 inch less legroom over Malaysian notice ?

I've booked it now anyway so I guess thats one less thing to worry about :scared:

I believe your tickets must state 40kg on them in order to get this amount when checking in. In order to have 40kg on your tickets you need to ask for this when booking. We originally booked our flights with Emirates for September of this year and didn't advise that we were emigrating and so got tickets with 20kg on them. When I asked if it could be changed they said no, you need to advise when booking. Fortunately we had to bring our flights forward due to a change in circumstances and so had to cancel and re-book for July. When re-booking we specifically asked for 40kg and had to provide evidence ie. photocopies of visas. Our tickets arrived with 40kg on them.

Still had to pay for excess at check-in due to bags being over 80kg though!

I flew with Emirates and didn't know about the 40kg allowance for people emigrating until I was checking in at the airport. Just show them your electronic visa that was emailed to you and tell them you are emigrating and they will ask for your passport as they will want to see whether this is your first time in Oz since being granted the visa.

We didn't need the weight allowance stated on our tickets.

WE FLEW WITH THE EMIRATES 6 WEEKS AGO ON A ONE WAY FLIGHT. AS LONG AS YOU CAN PROVE YOU ARE IMMIGRATING YOU ARE ALLOCATED 40KG EACH. JUST WATCH YOU ARE NOT OVER AS YOU WILL GET CHARGED BY THE KILO. WE WERE OVER , ALSO THEY WEIGH YOUR HAND LUGGAGE SO MAKE SURE THEY ARE WITHIN THE WEIGHT LIMIT. OTHER THAN THAT I WOULD RECCOMMEND EMIRATES TO ANYONE. GOOD LUCK.

Ditto what Carole has said above, I work at MEL airport and the non stop Dubai/Melbourne leg is classed as fuel critical, ie they need every drop they can squeeze on and need to know EXACTLY what is onboard, hence they weigh everything including hand luggage. If your hand luggage is over they will make you check it in and add it to your hold baggage allowance.

Of course noone would be dishonest enough to, say, leave their laptop with their friends/rellies who are dropping them off whilst they go to checkin and get everything else weighed

Mind you, if a fair proportion of people did so, wouldn't the fuel end up being critical?

There's a big safety margin built in and gate/cabin staff will be looking at what's being brought on board, anyone taking the p**s will get hauled up and they allow for the fact a number of unaccounted for items will get on.

We were going to fly Emirates to take advantage of 40kg one way migrant luggage allowance each. However when travel agent phoned Emirates you are not allowed luggage allowance if you are stopping over anywhere - only if you fly continuously - they wouldn't budge on this rule to we booked Singapore airlines instead as they still award 40kg even with a stopover.

You're OK if it's too heavy to get in the air at Melbourne, they just keep on taxiing up the freeway and try again at Adelaide

They asked if I had any hand luggage and I picked it up like it weighed a feather so that fooled them! Well I must have got lucky cos they didn't weigh it which was a good thing cos it must have weighed about 15kg! PHEW!

Can anyone tell me at what rate per kilo the excess is charged at? And is there a cut off where they just won't allow any more? (visions of turning up at the airport on a 40kg allowance, then having to pay £900 per kilo extra and having to leave a case behind )

we flew with emirates in july, we also had a stop over in dubai and we were still allowed the 40 kg. we were told it was an extra £36 PER KILO OVER

I was going to ask the same thing myself today.
Excess Baggage (link at bot of page) do have a shop at the airport terminal, so if emirates are difficult or to expensive we will take our excess to them.
