Me my Hubby and 2 boys go to the Gold Coast on 3rd Jan and my Hubby is a Spark. He has just e-mailed this bloke who has said it takes 6 weeks to get your paperwork looked at, then an 8 week course and then it can take 12 weeks before eventually getting the licence. Is this right?? thats going to be about 5 months with no income - surley this cant be right?? are you aware of this? do you have any other info that you think me might need??

HI terry have you done the exams yourself or are you just working as you say without the papers because on another thread someone was quoting 6 months for the licence.
also did you get any books on the exams you need to take

As others have said, the initial TRA classification is only useful for migration purposes - registration for electricians is also likely to be required in due course, and the procedures (and departments concerned) vary between the States and Territories. As Glenn said to me when I enquired of him on this very subject earlier this week, welcome to federalism!

I have an agent and will hand out advice if there is anything useful, basically you just need to convince the TRA that you are an electrician, its a bit of a slog but seems straightforward.

hi thrud i understand you need to get documents certificates signed by a authorised person who is classed as an authorised person any ideas

Tommy mate you do need to get the certificates authorised, this can be done by either,

Solicitor
Notary Public
Justice of the peace
Commissioner for oaths

I used the solicitor, they charge about £5 per copy, I thought this was expensive but what can you do, I suppose it makes a pleasant change for a solicitor to be making an honest buck and not living from someone elses misery, LOL.


They should use a stamp and ensure that they sign it, the name is also clearly printed, includes position of signatory, contact details of signatory.

Hi there, Yep I'm afraid this is right! you have to take your uk certificates and get the equivalent cert from the Qld board who don't meet very often, they then decide whether to give you the equivalent cert.. circa 6 weeks, then with this cert you can work as a 'mate' and have your work signed off each week, you do this for 6 months then are allowed to work on your own, this is when you get your licence!! I believe you can now take an exam.. We are in the same position as you, although cos we have lived there b4 have the certificate already......... now hubbie will have to find a job as a mate or pass the exam to bypass this bit..

hi we have been here 4 weeks now,darren has just got his certificate (which was from the tra over here)which means that he can now apply for his licence.Before he can apply for his licence he needs to do a cpr course and there isnt one untill nov 2nd so he has to wait untill then
Once he send his application form in with the cert from the tra meeting over here they will asses him again and decide which exam he will have to do to get his electrical licence.
Please note that a health and safety course has to be done as well to get your blue card before you can work on any site.At the mo untill Darren gets his licence he is working as a trade assistant for an electrical firm just to bring onme cash in.
i think that it's all the waiting which is annoying as the british sparkies are very well quallified to do the job.

cheers for that bit of info dave next question copy of all certs what do you reckon should they be fully coulored copies such as for the city & guilds or will just plain black and white do . you are obviously ahead of me with your application did you use an agent or are you doing it yourself.

Just plain black and white copies will surfice, I used concept australia north, for peice of mind but must admit it has been quite straight forward. Our 138 application went last week, if you have any questions please feel free to ask away.
