Easter eggs ..........
Okay , was laughed off the planet AGAIN today because I said that Easter eggs symbolised the rock rolling away from the tomb.(well it did in Scotland)
How stupid could I be ? Apparently it's the sign of "new life ".(In Australia) What does it mean to you ? Apart from the obvious chocolate pleasure. I hate playground talk !!! Tass. |

Re: Easter eggs ..........
Nah, I was always told the egg is the symbol of rebirth i.e., pagan festival of spring taken over by Christians telling of rebirth of Christ (and I used to work for a Bishop :D )

Re: Easter eggs ..........
The reason that we celebrate the ressurrection when we do, is all to do with the timing of passover, which was celebrated by Jesus and the 12 disciples at the last supper, prior to the crucifixion. Whereas our word Easter may be drived from a pagan word, the modern Greek word for Easter is derived from the word for Passover, it's a huge festival; bigger than Christmas.
It can be accurately dated as it ties in with lunar phases etc. though I'm not great at explaining this bit. Christmas took over the pagan festival as stated. Have never heard of the rock thing though :) Anyway, so what if Christian festivals took over pagan ones, sounds like progress to me, better to eat a few choccie eggs and remember Christ is risen, than eat your own children! You'd be appauled by what some of the pagans got up to in ancient times. |

Ahh well, I will remember what's truly important and not dwell on the negatives... for instance many people come to know Christ at Easter time and I don't see why eggs and bunnies should have a pagan significance; God made them after all. It's more important what we assign to these symbols than what perverted stuff was associated with them in history. |
