Easter eggs ..........

Okay , was laughed off the planet AGAIN today because I said that Easter eggs symbolised the rock rolling away from the tomb.(well it did in Scotland)
How stupid could I be ? Apparently it's the sign of "new life ".(In Australia)
What does it mean to you ? Apart from the obvious chocolate pleasure.
I hate playground talk !!!
Tass.

Have to agree!! I was always told at school that it represented the rock - thats a Scottish education for you :D I do believe however that the word Easter comes from the name of some fertility goddess ( hence I think eostrogen) which may be where the eggs / rebirth/ spring stuff comes from

Nah, I was always told the egg is the symbol of rebirth i.e., pagan festival of spring taken over by Christians telling of rebirth of Christ (and I used to work for a Bishop :D )

If your going to do the easter egg hunt thing just dont leave them outside for too long, cos by 8.30/9am they will be doing like the wicked witch thing and be melting.

Yup Oestre pagan goddess of fertility, a lot of early Christian traditions have there roots in paganism - I think the church was pretty clever in that it realised it was easier to bring people over to their way of thinking if they amalgamated certain festivals. I mean the fact that 25th December was already an important date in the pagan calendar and it just coincidentally happened to be the date Christ was born??? :)
Anyway Im off to stuff my face with chocolate (celebrating the pagan festival of stuffyergobb)

Re: Easter eggs ..........

The reason that we celebrate the ressurrection when we do, is all to do with the timing of passover, which was celebrated by Jesus and the 12 disciples at the last supper, prior to the crucifixion. Whereas our word Easter may be drived from a pagan word, the modern Greek word for Easter is derived from the word for Passover, it's a huge festival; bigger than Christmas.
It can be accurately dated as it ties in with lunar phases etc. though I'm not great at explaining this bit.
Christmas took over the pagan festival as stated.
Have never heard of the rock thing though :)
Anyway, so what if Christian festivals took over pagan ones, sounds like progress to me, better to eat a few choccie eggs and remember Christ is risen, than eat your own children! You'd be appauled by what some of the pagans got up to in ancient times.

But God never commanded His people to celibrate Easter, but Passover in 'rememberance' to Jesus as the Lamb that was slain. The church has lost its roots and contaminated with heathen beliefs eg Easter, Christmas etc...

Ahh well, I will remember what's truly important and not dwell on the negatives... for instance many people come to know Christ at Easter time and I don't see why eggs and bunnies should have a pagan significance; God made them after all. It's more important what we assign to these symbols than what perverted stuff was associated with them in history.

Ok then we'll continue to compromise with God's word because easter eggs and bunnies are all pretty things which CANNOT save man's futile soul. Sorry for the hard word but that the gospel for you.

You can get Lindt here.....thank god!

If you are in Adelaide or Melbourne Haighs is the best. They state that they got their chocolate recipe from a Mr Lindt in Switzerland. :)

Do you remember this song from school?

"The angels rolled the stone away
The angels rolled the stone away
It was early Easter Sunday morning
And the angels rolled the stone away" or summit like that.

Well, ever since I read this thread it has been rattling around in my head. Thanks

My hubbie has just came in the door with a Lindt bunnie for me!!! This is a bit too coincidental.....I've been moaning the face off him to buy me one for Easter. Apparently he was given it at work today.

Can't tell you if it tastes the same - I've been instructed to keep it for Easter Sunday. But the the wee choccy eggs are fab.
