Do you need receipts for this?

So far I've managed $275 for professional institute membership (which my company actually pays but don't tell anyone). I use my computer at home for access to work email (occasionally) - can I claim depreciation for that?

I went on a five day training course (paid for by my company), can I claim the km's to and from my place of work?

Any more????

You need receipts to substantiate any work expenses exceeding $300.
And you need to keep them for 5 years.

I wouldn't have thought charitable donations come under work expenses though....

No I thought that after I posted, so I have just looked on the ATO website and I dont know

I think though that it might be the case that if you are claiming over the $300 for any deductions you might have to provide proof.

I would honestly recommend a good accountant to do your tax though, some of them only charge around $100 and can find a lot more 'legal' deductions than you would ever think about, and you can claim their fee on next years return. If there is an audit on your tax, they should be able to justify any claim they have made for you:)

Hi Auspal,

Thanks for taking the time to look. I used H&R Block last year and they didn't tell me anything more than I already knew from asking around at work, I guess if you find a good one that's on 'your side' it makes all the difference.

So far I owe about two hundred bucks (includes the 1.5% medicare), would be nice to at least get it neutral......

I have just helped my son do his etax and he claimed $200 for Child First, but he had a receipt for this. I notice that even if you give $2 to a charity they will offer you a receipt.

Yep

I have one sat on my desk for all of $10 and it specifically states "Donations of $2 and over are tax deductible".
