Dust !!

Sydney and at least as far down as 100k South of it have an interesting start to the day to day.... the world is Orange.

Everything is coated in sand from the interior.

Freaky sky

Woke up this morning and the sky was freaky I mean really freaky. Bright orange like something was on fire. I ran upstairs and onto the balcony and my neighbours were out too and I said what the hell is it. They told me it was a dust storm. I have taken some photos but its hard to see the real ambiance.

Yes, I took this just before six this morning - the colours are exactly like the photo.

I can taste the dust inside the house, despite sealed double glazing. I cleaned the patio yesterday - serves me right <g>.

Hell yes. The cats are very spooked and woke us up early; we thought the world had ended.

I can smell it and taste it. (Not a good time to have a totally knackered autoimmune system.)

Is it a dust strorm rolling in or bushfire:eek:

Up here in SEqld I walked the dogs at 5.30 am, the wind is severe gusts and the wind was already hot, think we were predicted to get dust roll in this afternoon too:thumbdown:

It's dust and apparently very unusual for NSW. Very windy.

Maybe the two (at least!) threads can be merged?

Just posted on another thread but it's very bad in the city itself. I can smell and taste it too, although our house is far from sealed.

Just wondering if it's worth getting ready for work or not  Busy day planned.

I wouldn't be going anywhere today if I can avoid it, particularly if you have any health issues. It might not look so spectacular now the sun is up, but there is just as much dust in the air.

Sydney turns blood red: dust storm blankets city!
http://www.smh.com.au/environment/sy...0923-g0so.html

Its the dust brought in from the western deserts. Very strong winds expected down there throughout the day too.

Anybody getting up now will wonder what all the fuss was about.... and regret missing those spectacular skies.

Asthmatics and those with breathing problems take it easy and seal up your house. Traffic was getting messy at 7 this morning. Tunnels are full of the dust.

Visibility is about 500m to a 1km. North Sydney looks very eery from up here.

Yeah I know, it's just...well I don't know what's the usual form on these things! I don't want to wimp out and find all my colleagues have struggled in from the sticks, when I'm only ten minutes from work. I'm getting ready, The Geek can drive me to the station and I should be ok from there.

You're right it's not as red now but it's still thick. One of my cats has had a coughing fit and we haven't even opened a door. :(

SMH has some good photos.

yeah, some good shots. Mine is as it looked straight off the camera, no effects applied at all, and it looks redder than Sydney. Could be because I'm right on the coast and the sunrise is always that little bit brighter, or possibly we got more sand in the sky than up in Sydney.

We had it pretty much all day yesterday - it was very weird. Looks like it is playing havoc with flights arriving and departing as well in Sydney

bithbheo Sep 22nd 2009 10:18 am

Red Centre try Red Sydney ;-)

Wow ...look at the colour and dust in Sydney.....and most of NSW.....and earthquakes in melbourne ......country of contrasts thats for sure.....

Re: Dust !!

I remember the one we had in Melbourne about 18 months ago - awesome but not nice for those with chest problems.

My OH is in Sydney city this morning and he said it's incredible - all the alarms are going off and it was hard work just taking a short walk from the hotel to the office.

I'm just hoping it will clear during the day and he can get home tonight!

Hope everyone up there is okay!

KK

p.s. Seasider - hope your cat is okay now.

Re: Dust !!

p.s. forgot to say we had another earthquake down here in Mellie last night - not far from where we live but I was at an aerobics class and never felt it!

What is going on in this country......! It's almost biblical - anyone for a locust?

Re: Dust !!

Oh my thread has merged!
Just returned from school run (7.30am) in the Hills area. Traffic is fine but slow and many drivers/ pedestrians had flu masks on and all cars have a thick film of orange dust on them. Uluru has come to Sydney. We listened to the warning on the radio and they are doing a good job of updating the situation for travellers.
Home to survey the damage. Thick red dust everywhere which reminds me of our trips to The Red Center! The pool has a thick layer of red on it, likewise everything in garden is a pale shade of red and the wind is high.
Surreal .

Well I made it to work (about an hour earlier than normal!) and hope those that normally take ferries manage to get here one way or another.

koalakim - thanks, he was just very quiet when we left but his pal had joined him on the bed for a snuggle so they should be ok.

Our three year old woke us up at about 630 am shouting "Mummy, it's all orange outside"! It was completely surreal! Took a couple of pictures from the windows. Everything smells dusty and the walls around the garden which are painted white are covered in a fine orange dust.

The other thing is the wind, of course - not unusual here for August and September but pretty wild today for all that.

Wild enough for me to cancel my golf - yes! that strong! I don't fancy walking around beneath all those WidowMakers today.....

Yep.

Last night we had the mother of all storms. Sheet and fork lightning which lit up the entire sky like it was day time. Torrential rain... then the dust moved in.

We're still blowing a gale and all the views have disappeared... and rain.

At least it's not as bad as the big one a few years ago which blew in a load of topsoil from the west. The farmers were not happy!

Just come back from Shellharbour North beach and it's a strange two-tone colour. It's usual white where the sea has cleared last nights sand and the other half that looks like it's had tons of what looks like builders sand dumped on it...... and that wind is getting up... a lot.

It's not a country as geologically stable as most think...
http://home.iprimus.com.au/foo7/volcmap.html

...and according to this article just posted yesterday, we are thousands of years overdue for a 'big one' !
http://volcanism.wordpress.com/2009/...anic-eruption/

Associate Professor Bernie Joyce yesterday said there were about 400 volcanoes across Victoria, including some in the state's western uplands that could erupt at any time, potentially devastating the land around them and claiming lives.

''The geological record shows that new volcanoes in these areas have erupted perhaps every 2000 years in the past 40,000 years - and given there has not been a major eruption there for the past 5000 years, a significant eruption seems well overdue,'' he said.
