Default Driving in Australia

Hi,

I will be moving to Australia next month after receiving a 189 . In order to drive there for the first 3 months (think that is the limit) I have asked for an International Drivers Licence. To my surprise, it was issued in Portuguese (my parents picked it up so I didn't have an opportunity to enquire the agency).

I have read online that this is valid as long as I have my original drivers with me (which is also Portuguese), but I find that strange.

Can anyone enlighten me?

Hi Bizkut,

I've moved your question to the main forum as it has no relevance to the immigration section. Where in Australia are you headed?

On a PR, you don't need an international license permit. Your existing license will be ok for three months, however, you might need a translation and/or validation based on which state you will be applying it. All states
license Web sites mentions these rules in details.

Remember to drive on the Left as opposed to in Portugal

I'd definitely get a translation as a licence is one of the main "points" documents if you need to do the 100 points of ID thing such as applying for a rental etc. Is your Portuguese licence a photo ID?
