Default To Drive Or Not To Drive - That Is The Question!!!

Hi All,

I passed my test here in the UK in Jan 03. I will be looking to buy a car in Oz when we arrive.

What are the conditions - do I need to resit test? Theory?

What will insurance be like? Anyone got any Oz car insurance sites that do online quotes.

I already have my postcode for quote purposes (4567 - Noosa Heads)

Cheers

Anthony

Anthony,
Regarding the driving test, if you have passed your test for longer than 1 yr you will only need to take a written test in most states. Depending upon your destination you can view some of the tests on the appropriate web sites. Do a search on this forum as there have been some good threads on the theory tests recently.

I know in QLD, only third party insurance is compulsory and it is included in your rego which is expensive - around $600 per year- no matter where you live. You have the option of paying your car rego 6 monthly. You also have the option in your rego of choosing which insurance co you want to go with. Although all companies charge pretty much the same, some offer rewards if you use them for other insurance too. As far as other car insurance goes, get a broker. If you're over 25 you pay less. There are pensioner deals too - www.apia.com.au

I think you may have to sit a theory driving test and you should get a QLD licence soon after you arrive. Road rules have recently been standarized between states although there are different penalties and still some small differences. See http://www.transport.qld.gov.au/qt/R...f?OpenDatabase

Compulsory insurance (I'm in Brisbane), I paid $348 (GST included),. I paid for my insurance separately from the rego. I got it from the auction where I bought the car (QLD transport just deducted the insurance from the rego when I went to rego the car) . you do normally pay for the compulsory insurance with the rego in the QLD transport offices , but I didn't I paid for mine at the auctions. ("they" have only a couple nominated insurers - ie you can't just go with any insurance company to insure it for "compulsory")

Extra insurance such as Comprehensive, third party fire and theft etc, it depends on what car you have, mine was $581 (from Just car insurance), but I have a foreign/imported car which is harder to insure, a lot of the big companies will not insure imports which I only found out after I had bought the car. I had to ring round a load of companies to find an insurer.

Online quotes- try google search engine and just type in "online car insurance Australia" you'll come across a few companies.

cheers
