Default Driest winter for 50 years

Brisbane has only recieved 69 ml of rain since April, even this being the dry season we should have got around 300 ml in that same period. Driest winter since 1950.

Sounds great to new arrivals, but the tinder dry brown grass is going to be a real worry once the weather warms up. Time to start trimming trees and cleaning gutters I think :scared:

69ml it sounded like that fell in Melb last night. Plenty of rain here and everywhere is really green.

Makes you wonder if the water companies could build a 1700km pipe between the two cities, I'm sure Melb wouldn't mind sharing their plentiful water supply.

Melbourne's reservoirs are still only about 50% full. A Vic state govt report reckons that Melbourne's water supplies will run out by 2012....how worrying is that?

Melb might have less water supply than up here, they only recently came out of a very dry spell, months of it I think.

Bris usually ends up ok its subtropical and annual rainfall is just under 2000 mm a year but it mainly falls in summer, worring bit is if its this dry now its not long till we heat up and boom one stray ciggie butt and there will be bushfires for sure.

Raindance now.

Edit, now seen Megalanias reply thought he would be up on this type of stuff boy from the bush maybe?

There were reports on the radio of someone taking 4 1/2 hours to go about 5 miles.....

Sorry it was a bit of an experiment, just thought Aus forum, hey lets see if we can discuss important aspects of OUR climate, without it turning into a ours is worse than yours debate. Its so weird reading posts from the UK on our weather, like storms, floods, droughts, bushfires, heatwaves never get mentioned. All a big part of our country.

Gibraltar has no reservoirs for storing vast quantities of drinking water and has built a huge de-salination plant. The plant runs on household waste and is very efficient [designed by the Danes] The toilets there all use sea water to flush. When so many people live reasonably close to the coast in Australia why don't they just build some plants of their own and keep the greenies happy by recycling the waste instead of dumping into landfill.

In the brisbane area, some water supply dams are down to about 8% of their full capacity and still falling! The boat ramp that was in use a couple of years ago is now often mistaken for a cricket pitch as the water receded a couple of hundred metres.
