We used to have a party for the "young 'un" each year until she grew out of it. Parents and kids all dressed up, fog machine, apple bobbing, fake spiders, skeletons etc. All available for a few dollars at discount shops like Base Warehouse or similar. It all adds up though.

When DD was younger (in the UK) we did dress up and carve a pumpkin, but only went trick-or-treating to the neighbours. I hated the whole teen "give us sweets with menaces" that went on , and it terrifies the elderly to be confronted like that. When we went round with DD we would give the householder a home-made skeleton cookie, and never asked for any treat in return, and only went to houses that had decorations and who we knew wouldn't mind.

Here DD likes to be at home in a very scary costume and hand out cookies and sweets to any who come round. No one at all came last year, and she was an excellent zombie too - she was quite disappointed.

Some of the kids in our neighbourhood do. I know that people go on about it being an American thing (although actually, I think its origins were in the UK), but as long as the kids are supervised I view it as a bit of harmless fun. We always have little bags of treats to give them, and if I spot them coming up the driveway I like to stand behind the closed front door and scream loudly when they ring the doorbell. You have to take your fun where you find it
