Pete,
Put the heaviest stuff in the bags you are taking as hand luggage. Also, when you check in, if there is anyone with you qho is not flying, make sure you leave your hand luggage with them - then the check in staff won't see whether it is heavy/bulky. If the worst comes to the worst and at the gate they won't let you carry it on, then it will just go in last with the buggys and wheelchairs, and you collect it from the ground crew the other end.
lol, now that sounds like a cunning plan

If they try to kick up a fuss about my taking it on as hand luggage i will just tell them how much its worth and insist they insure it against damage in the hold. I've done it before and it worked like a charm. That time i did'nt have quite so much stuff though.....

Pete

Why not put it air freight, saves you the hassle of carrying it, it can be insured better than on a poxy travel policy and its cheaper than you think. Oh and you can still take all your socks

Watch if you have internal connecting flights in the UK. We are travelling Edinburgh to Oz via Heathrow and had to call British Midland to OK the extra baggage....

Best tip I got was to buy some lightweight kit bags for the one way trip rather than the heavy duty, heavy weight Samsonite style cases which take up 25% of your allowance....
