Question Dogs in Perth

Hi All! We're moving to Perth (probably in Jan '06, but are visiting in Nov this year ) and we're bringing our 2 mad cocker spaniels with us. Can anyone tell me how dog-friendly Perth is? We are hoping to settle North of the River, around 30 mins (max) from CBD towards the coast. Hillarys, Cottesloe and Scarborough are looking good at the moment (but obviously nothing definite yet). Are there any rules and regulations we should know about that differ from UK (we're in Scotland)? Are dogs allowed on beaches/in parks etc? And most importantly, how difficult is it to get a rental property that accepts dogs? Someone told me that dogs aren't allowed off-lead, but I'm finding that a bit difficult to believe - how else can the dog be exercised? I'm wondering if they've got a bit mixed up about this fact. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

From a currently dogless perpective Perth seems very dog friendly to me.
I have visited the dog beach in Cottesloe which looks like dog heaven quite frankly. Dogs definately off lead here. In some parks you may have to keep them on the lead in others not. There nseems to be a whole socila scene with walking dogs in the parks around us which is lovely.
Perth seems a good place for both dogs and kids. WE will hopefully have our pup soon

If you can't find a rental that'll take your dogs we'll dogsit.

Good luck with the move in Jan.

Cheers Ali

rentwise we found :-
2 cats = no problem, more than 2 cats = problem
1 small dog = no problem, 2 small dogs or 1 large dog sometimes a problem, more than 2 small or 1 large dog = problem

There are plenty of parks that have off-leash areas and quite a few doggy beaches. They are quite strict and fairly large fines can be incurred but as long as you obey the signage you should have no problems.

All dogs have to be licenced here in Perth.
There are LOADS of dog beaches about and they are just fab.
We take Lampard to the dog beach at Quinns Rock, where he plays in the surf, often joined by numerous other dogs............and on occasions a few dolphins!!!

Or maybe he could be sulking? Prefer that idea to the thought of dog-turds floating in the surf as you walk along the beach......nice

Just noticed you are moving to Perth in Jan. Have you booked your dogs into quarantine yet?. We are moving next month and they do not have any spaces in Perth for dogs until mid January. We are having to fly our dog to Sydney as they have spaces in quarantine there , she will do her 30 days there and then get a connecting flight to Perth. Would advise you to book your dogs in asap. Apparently Perth only has a very small quarantine base, so they are very limited to spaces.

BTW the dog beaches are a great place to give the dogs a good run.

Not only must each dog have a dog licence but there is a restriction on the number of dogs you are allowed to keep. In the City of Joondalup (my local City Council) the maximum number of dogs is 2.

The City of Joodalup provides further information on the council website http://www.joondalup.wa.gov.au/cms/f...y.asp?file=388

Not sure if the same applies to all councils so may be something worth checking when you are deciding on where to live.

We have found Perth very dog friendly and also take ours to the beach. Dog owners here are very responsible and I have never seen a bit of poop anywhere as everyone carries bags with them. Even the beaches provide poop bags for free as you go onto the beach. When I take Deefer out for a walk everyone is friendly and says hello.

Hop this helps,

Steve.

Thanks for all your answers guys, much appreciated . It looks like we'll be moving out Feb/March now so I'll make sure that quarantine is booked asap - thanks.

Can't wait to get them to those beaches .
