Default Does Australia have Rhoderdendrons?

Hi Guys,

this may be another silly question, but I have a growing passion for Rhoderdendrons, and I was wondering if they have them in Australia?

Any one know?

Many thanks

Chris

Yes. In fact, we have most of the more common UK flora, thanks to home-sick British colonials who did their best to recreate home Down Under.

In fact, Blackheath, in the Blue Mountains west of Sydney, has an annual rhododenron festival, in November I believe. Azaeleas too are popular.

Um, I don't think so.

My father was a British ex-pat who came to Australia in the 1960s, while my mother was born in Australia to a British ex-pat naval officer who came to Australia in the 1950s after serving on the HMS Taciturn during WWII.

I'm not exactly sure what my ancestors got up to in their spare time, but I reckon it would have involved mowing lawns, sipping tea, munching cucumber sandwiches and swearing at Don Bradman.

Rhododendrons are Not native UK flora.

They originated in China and were introduced to the UK relatively recently.

They have now become a pest and are destroying large areas af the Snowdonia national park, the Lake district and elsewhere :scared:

There are large scale eradication programmes in operation in several areas

Trouble is you can't poison the buggers :scared:

They have to be pulled up by the roots otherwise they will spread again.

That is why they are so difficult to get rid of.
