Re: Do you get mosquitos in Perth ????
The mossie can be bad (but seasonal), the flies are seasonal, but horrid when here. The march flies are VILE. Seasonal as well, thank god. These huge, but slow flying beasties give a really nastie bite. BUT, on the upside, if you see them land on you they are relatively easy to kill.
Oh, I love it here. |

Re: Do you get mosquitos in Perth ????
I had not even heard of March flies and we lived through March without noticing being bitten. The mossies where bad in summer, especially at sunset, but non around at the moment. Have not experienced the flies yet, I hear they are bad in November. We arrived on 1st Dec and there were a few persistent ones but not so bad that we were breathing them in.
I dont know how true it is, but I heard mossies are attracted to perfume and are more likely to bite you if you eat bananas? but will leave you alone if you eat Marmite? dont know if that applies to Vegemite. :D |

Re: Do you get mosquitos in Perth ????
I think you react differently to different type of mosquito. I got bitten in Cyprus but didn't react at all, the first I knew was when I saw one of them feasting on me! Here in Texas I react really badly to them, my first ever bite was a welt that was 2 inch tall and took 2 weeks to completely go. Now I react less, but the bites still last for 3 or 4 days. Oddly fire ant bites last just 5 minutes, but i know Texans that suffer really badly (the poor wife put her riding helmet on the ground while she tacked up the horse, and put it back on - must have been on an ants nest, it was a nasty site). I spend a lot of my leasure time outdoors and use about 1 can of deet a week! I hate to think the harm its doing me. In Canada a bite rash would last about 12 hours (I didn't mind the ones in Canada, you stood a chance as you could see the blighters, here in Texas they are virtually invisible).
I went to the pharmacist after my first bad reaction here in Texas and he said some people react differently from region to region in Texas. One of our cats react badly to mosquito bites too, he is allergic to them! We have to put deet on his ears and nose or he gets angry red blisters from the bites. He featured in a science paper in a Vet book recently as an example of cats being bitten. Some people refuse to give heartworm medication as they say "my animal doesn't get bitten", but Fineas (our puss) is proof that even our furry family members suffer too. I know West Nile can be transitted by mosquito bites, I hope more serious diseases can't (AID's for example) :scared: Anyone know? I'd ask the doctor wife but she is working nights on emergency this week so I won't see her until Thursday! Plus she never tells me the simple answer, its always long fancy words that always seems to end up with my eyes glazing over

In Cyprus I didnt get bitten once. I wonder if it depends on the country you visit? When I was in QLD I got bitten initially but after a few days I didnt. |

Re: Do you get mosquitos in Perth ????
My husband is a mossie magnet, and he has a really nasty reaction to them, the bite swells like mad and the muscle stiffens, if they get his ankles he can't walk the next day. But..... where we live around 2k from the ocean maybe less as the mossie flies he very rarely gets bitten so i'm guessing no or few mossies here, if we venture to the rellies though then we have problems, some stay in the hills and an evening sitting in their back yard will leave him in agony for days, some other live down south on a canal and it's the same there.
So i recon that if you are near the ocean there are less than inland and you should defo avoid lakes etc, I know sometimes that around lake joondalup you see swarms of them. As for the delightful march flies, my cousins neighbour is alergic to them and has a really nasty time when they are agt their worst but she was told that it's not the bite thats the problem, aparantly they pee on you and thats what stings like hell, whether they do this while their teeth are sunk into you i don;t know. :D Lynn |
