I think that's a subconscious defence mechanism too. Got to think things are really bad to make it easier to leave. Which isn't to say that they aren't bad, just that it's easier to focus on the bad stuff.

I may be different I haven't had enough of this country I think it is beautiful and the people are friendly with a great sense of humour, although most shop assistants can be a little dour, what I feel is that I want to be somewhere I get to be outside more and Oz was the best for us.

Mind you, looking at the current exodus from Oz, it's probably the same everywhere. As has been noted, 'same s**t, different bucket' (sorry whoever's sig that is!). But I don't think you should put up with something you don't like if you have the power to change it...

My hubby hates his job. He was made redundant 18 months ago and was forced to take this job as we needed the money. He has been unable to find another job since (he is in IT). He has just been told by his company that he has been given a £1500 pay rise and a £1000 bonus. Very nice, thankyou very much. They also want to make him a "senior" this year. But they have also told him that the 4 weeks of courses he needs to attend for his MSc need to come out of his own annual leave/unpaid leave/flexitime rather than company paid for training time, even though the courses are of benefit to the company as well as him.

I am on maternity leave until May. My company has a regrading structure put in place last April (rate for the job) and my grade was split into three. Needless to say I was not happy with the grade I had been put in as it meant that I would get no pay rise . . . ever. I appealed against my grading, on the grounds that I had been put into that grade because of my current salary and not because of my level of skill and experience. My appeal was rejected. I appealed against the appeal decision. This too was rejected and they told me that "It would appear that your job has changed significantly since April, and we suggest that you go for merit promotion to the grade that you are seeking". My job was exactly the same. Merit promotion involves being interviewed by the executives of the company, who have absolutely no idea what it is that you do. I was told that my interview is best conducted after I return from maternity leave. The whole company has just awarded a 2% pay rise to everybody (the first pay rise in 4 years) and 5% to everybody who is currently paid below their rate for the job threshold (i.e. not me). If my merit promotion interview had been before I went on maternity leave, or indeed they had just accepted my appeal in the first place then I would have got 5%.

So, on balance, we are still moving to Oz as it can't be worse can it? (What do you mean we may move out and not be able to get a job, spend all our money on ill thought out dreams) A risk worth taking?? We think so. We are planning to leave this summer.

Still not 100% decided. Either Sydney or Melbourne. Would prefer Sydney as have some friends who have offered to babysit! No, seriously it depends where Daddy gets a job. Out of those two cities though because of IT needs.

It's a bit like when you decide to buy a new car, there seems more of that car on the road that you spot. There aren't it's just you are more aware.

Went on a very interesting course about it years ago called 'The Lou Tice Investment in Excellence' American chap. It was a bit brain washy, but it taught you focus and if you focus on something that you want badly enough, it will happen because you become more aware of your dream and start to things which relate to it.

What I've found fascinating is that, when you tell people you're going, they express genuine envy and say 'Can I come, too? I'm sure you'll need your own hairdresser/vetinarian/nurse/ cleaner/car mechanic/gardener/florist/ dentist/ postman/paper boy/council workman/neighbor/doctor/pharmacist/fashion adviser/pool attendant/dustman etc in Oz'!

No one (apart from my Mom) has said 'Why on earth do you want to leave the UK?'

A 2003 survey apparently found that 50% of the Brit population wanted to emigrate. I was surprised that it was only 50% (note though, this was after the Gulf war started & before the long hot summer, & before we won the rugger so it may be different now...).
