Yes, you have the wrong end of the stick!

My full name is Bridie, although in Ireland Bridie can be short for Bridget but not in my case.

Doesnt stop lots of smart arses calling me Bridget thinking they're really clever though (that's NOT aimed at you Grant )

When I worked in Argos once I was sat on the checkout and this middle aged guy said "Congratulations" I said "Excuse me?" he said "Congratulations, Bride!" What a wazzuck!

My real (given) name is Laura, so no problems there, aside from the occasional 'Lauren' confusion. I have been called Laurie my whole life though, which is apparently a boy's name in Australia. That should lead to some interesting mistakes.

Red face Re: do they get your name

Not my name but my job, usually goes like this ;
"What do you do?"
"I'm a nurse"
"A what ?!?"
"A nurse"
"A what?!?"
"A nurse, you know ,works in a hospital, wipes bums, gives medicines, used to wear a white dress and a funny hat,a nurse!!!!!!!!"
SEVERAL MORE , I DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT AND THEN IT FINALLY CLICKS-
"Oh , a N-E-E-E-R-SE !!!!! , You speak funny, bloody English!"
Great offence all round after about the 50th time , so now I just say "nothing"
Tass.

Well I am ok.......Amanda is quite a popular name in Australia it seems, so I have no trouble. They can't always understand anything else I say as I have a Yorkshire accent.

My name is Mandy, which i don't think is difficult but I must pronounce it different to the Aussies because they always think I'm saying Maundy or Monday and I get comments about it being Tuesday!!!!
I sometimes let it go or i call myself Amanda.

No problem here - but then Dag is an Aussie word and Boy is pretty hard to get wrong.

Cheers,

I have fun with my surname - all my ID is still in my maiden name, so I use that at work. Every so often though someone will ring or send a fax using my married name, and it causes all sorts of confusion. One poor bloke spent two hours trying to find out who the last fax was destined for! I did point out that with an unusual christian name it should have been common sense to try me first, but he didn;t get the point
