Yes. Quite a few places start their sales before Christmas as well.

They start on boxing day and continue for the following 364 days in many shops.
Just the same as UK in my opinion with the bigger the shop the bigger the shouting about their sale.

They have sales but IMO not quite the intensity of the UK ones where they seem to give huge reductions so the stocks cleared out the next day. You know like the next sale where you are killed in the rush
Here this year coles was still trying to flog easter eggs a month later with just30% off
Same with diaries, you can still buy 2010 ones in our local newsagent with just 50% off, idiots

Myer had 1000 people waiting outside when it opened its doors at 5am on Boxing Day, said spokesman Damian Glass.
By late afternoon, it was still shoulder to shoulder in the aisles as people grabbed bargains in clothes, manchester, electronic equipment and homewares.

IT wasn't quite the Running of the Bulls - more like running for the bags, shoes, linen and electronic bargains.
Tens of of thousands of people dusted off their Christmas cobwebs and hangovers to scramble for heavily reduced items at Perth retailers yesterday
10,000 people walked through the doors of Myer in the city in the first hour.

Yes, there are good sales but you also need to remember to haggle. It's very un-English and feels a bit funny at first but you can usually get at least 10% off most things, more if you are bundling things like electrical equipment or furniture. I nearly forgot when I bought a computer the other evening until the guy standing next to me said "they'll give you 10% off if you ask" and sure enough they did.

I am in Queensland but agree that the sales are much the same as the UK.
Quite a few clothes shops have started to offer everything at 50% off now and I have bagged a few bargains.
I definitely would hold off any major purchase till the new year and as other people have said, ask for a discount, particularly if you are buying more than one item in the same shop.
Remember what the UK was like say 20 years ago when people used to give discount for cash? Well its much the same here, although you ask for the discount and it doesn't really matter if you end up paying by card.
I was in Harvey Norman last week looking at iPod accessories. The sales man came up and said what ever I was considering, a deal could be done. I bought an in car USB charger and a gadget that lets you play your iPod through the radio and he automatically knocked off $70 from the asking price without any real effort on my part. As long as you are polite and have a bit of banter, its usually easy to get a reduction or something thrown in for free
