Default do australian schools teach english

Aussies are renowned for shortening or abbreviating words and expressions, often adding –o or –ie after the word has been abbreviated.

why is this........cant they spell the full word ?

Goes with one of my eternal questions - why are sme of the words "ie" and some "o" - I mean, why is it "Firie" and "Ambo" = not only is it a bit lazy, there's no logic to it. Why not "Firo" and "Ambie"??

Scottish schools teach it too but reading some threads by our Scottish members on here you'd be forgiven for asking the same question

Out of interest, when you speak or write, would you use the word 'can't' or 'can not'?

Out of interest again, does it matter?

Shouldn't "Ambos" be "Amboes"? it's plural so should have an "e" added.

Firo doesn't have the right sound. Ambo does. Firie sounds better than Firo.
if there was a word for shortening mobile phone, they'd call it mobo, not mobie. Television however is tellie... it's just the sounds. There's a logic to it, just can't remember which one. Basically just use whatever 'sounds best'.

The same question could be asked about schools in the UK.
