Depends where you are going.

Digital in Sydney (except a couple of local booster transmitters) is broadcast on VHF, whereas in UK it is on UHF.

From what I have found UK Digital TV's and Set-top Boxes wont tune to digital VHF signals (though some will tune to annalouge VHF).

So the answer for Syndey would generally be 'no'

Cheers roger.

So does this mean a TV bought in Sydney may not necessarily work in Brisbane?!

To take a step back....to current analogue TV...

In Oz, some channels are broadcast on VHF some on UHF..therefore Oz TV's are generally able to tune to both

In UK, TV is on UHF so many TV's will only tune to UHF.

In Oz, 'the channel' number is used for the tuning. Channels 0 - 12 are VHF and 28-69 are UHF. You will see from the links below that some Digital is on VHF and soem on UHF, therefore, I assume that Oz Digi-Boxes & TV's can receive Digital in both VHF & UHF....whereas in UK all TV transmition is on UHF and so the manufacturer's supply UHF only digital capabilities.

I am having teh same problem, I have bought my HD inbuilt DTV tuner TV with me, it gets all analogue stations but does not seem to pick up any digital stations when I go to teh DTV tuner element. I tried inputting the frequencies and noticed all in perth are MHZ and mine only gives me the option of KHZ. I see the suggestion to try the German setting as my TV has all european options as well as other country options....any suggestions on getting teh digital channels other then those mentioned above i.e. a set top box and trying holland or germany

If you look on the web at your particular manufacturer it should tell you whether or not the tv is fitted with a "worldwide" tuner ( as are Samsung ) . If it is it will work, if not you take your chance

Regards

thanks for that. I tried the German setting and it picked up all the stations, however the HD channels it did locate, but I was not receiving any reception, sound or picture. Any reason there could be for this? Would it be something in my settings I may need to alter? I have a full HD tv so plays 720p, 1080i (i think) and 1080p?

The sound thing is normal - I think Oz uses a different sideband for analogue sound to other PAL countries. I think it's PAL-B.

All the free-to-air stations in Oz broadcast in digital (in most places) anyway so analogue reception isn't really an issue unless you want to import an RF signal from some other source - as I do, feeding Austar around the house by injecting the signal into the antenna co-ax.

Its not really about the sound, it found teh HD channels like 10HD buit has no sound or picture. It may be that soem of the parameters are different here in Aus. As some of the germans are not compatabile. MY TV seems to have a mix for every country, which if I could put them together it would be fully conversant with aus parameters, so maybe i just need a techo

I'm not very well up in the various formats and transmitting protocols but from what you are saying I infer that you can receive HD - obviously dgital - signals but are not getting the sound?

Perhaps you should go into the menus of the TV and see if there are options for the codecs: Dolby, bitstream or the like. Try them all and see if one will work.
