Default Digital set-top box?

Quickie: can a UK freeview digital set-top decoder be used in Oz? Do they in fact have digital transmissions?

Foxtel have just started their digital service. I'm not sure if the set top boxes are universal though. Maybe e-mail foxtel?

I asked the question on DBA Forum and the response was ... well ... inconclusive It seems that although Oz digital TV conforms to the DVB standard (as in UK), their are some quirks. I think if you already have the digibox, you've got nothing to lose by taking it and trying it. Have a read of some of the responses on the DBA Forum, they were interesting to say the least!!

One of the main differences here is some programs are recorded and broadcast in high definition TV. Most programs are not HDTV and you must have an HDTV(very expensive but very impressive) to be able to appreciate the difference.

There are non HDTV receivers that one can get and these receive the HDTV programs as normal pictures. My question is whether a British receiver will pick up HDTV broadcasts.

That could be a stumbling block. As far as I know and can find out, HDTV hasn't hit these shores yet so I guess a UK digibox wouldn't offer a great deal down under.

No a UK digital free to air box doesn't work here.
Aussie Terrestrial free to air digital box here is basically the five terrestrial channels digital. No extra ones like in the UK.
But FOXTEL has just gone digital, and its pretty good, although more expensive than the UK for the full package.

Thanks - just what I wanted. I was thinking of getting a box for the few months we have left in the UK but I think I can do without it now!
