Default Digital cameras - advice please!

Hi All

Flying to Oz on the 16th, with a 2 hour stop-over in Singapore.

What I want to know is - where is the best/cheapest place to get a good digital camera - UK, Singapore, Oz?

don't just walk into any shop and say 'i want a camera'

spend 1/2 hr in whsmiths and browse the digi camera mags

check out the 'best buy's and get one of those..in your price range..

otherwise you'll end up buying their hard to shift stock...

cheers

Yeah, a few years ago i would have said Singapore. But you need to have a good idea of the camera that you want first before you can compare prices. Otherwise you might get sold a turkey! There are plenty of online shops in the UK and Aus that can give you an idea of the relative prices.

Hi all
Im flying via Dubai soon, and I looked at pcworld.com for their top ten. Great explanations pros/cons.
Currently looking on web for best deal-some of the aussie DF prices dont seem too bad-depends what extras you can get free e.g. 128mb memeory cards (also you can get gst refunded if just visiting oz)
have been asking around and been told some of the more basic kodak point and shoot are ok-saw a few digital images and they were brilliant for 2mpix.More than enough quality to do the job well.
So thinking about going for an average camera ability/great bttery life and more memory, spare batteries and a quick re-charger as its more important to be able to take the pictures than to have a fancy camera and no money left for the extras!
Although-I do think optical zoom is important which might mean I have to pay that little bit extra.
Any other comments on this?

Have a look on www.amazon.co.uk (and no I don't have any shares in them!). I've always found that they have good prices. Also, read the customer reviews under each product.

I bought a 3.2MP Fuji camera in April. Its very easy to use, the quality is great and i've had no problems with it so far.

There are a huge amount of internet shops for digital cameras...and you can get really good deals here in the uk.

firstly....try www.warehouseexpress.com

As richard said....buy a digital camera magazine and you will find lots of cheap shops in them.

For memory cards....you can't beat www.7dayshop.com

Also....a GREAT website for choosing a camera.... www.dpreview.com

How much do you want to spend? I could suggest a few models.

Things i look for in a digital camera :

Size
Number of pixels - 2 million minimum for print, preferably 4 million
Battery type - recharchable is better than normall dry aa cells.
good optical zoom, a digital zoom is useless.
takes compactflash memory cards NO OTHER TYPE. Definatly not smartmedia.

Makes i prefer are Nikon, Canon, Minolta and Fuji. Nikon is best....my thats just my opinion

I would avoid sony....cameras a good quality, and pictures are good, but the batteries are terrible (short lifetime) and the memory cards expensive.

Cheers

Pete.

Go to the UK's www.2020shops.com. Look for the Compare Prices for Digital Photography. It can compare prices for numerous companies (don't forget to consider P&P).

The Canon A40 was the best £200 camera. The newer version even better. I can recommend the Canon- very good pics, east software.

My experience is that the Far East is no cheaper anymore.

Happy shopping,

Roger

I came through Singapore on the way to NZ, I bought a Canon A60 for 140 quid. (UK retail over 200)
There are hundreds of shops to choose from, I could take forever!
There is Funan IT mall, Sim Lim square & the shops on Orchard road.
Apparently, there is not much to choose between the outlets (as regards getting a bargain)at the mo because they are all fighting for tourist trade because of SARS.
I went for the first shop & haggeled, just tell them what you are willing to pay for it (well under tag price obviousley)

Good luck

Thanks for all the replies.

Decided to do a comparison on the Fuji FinePix A303 Digital Camera (3.2 pixels)

Cheapest price I could find in the UK is - £199
http://www.unbeatable.co.uk/CatalogueItem_12657.html

Singapore - $499 Singapore $ (£178)
http://it.asia1.com.sg/reviews/camer..._20021030.html

Oz - $592 (£242) or duty free - $539 (£221)
http://centre.net.au/Fuji_FinePix_A3...ra_000645.html

So, Singapore would be cheaper. Still undecided.

Keep the info coming!

You're a star. Looks like the best deal as no guarantee that Singapore airport will have what I want. Thanks!
