I wouldn't be too worried about perceived costs of living... If it costs more to live here then it pays more too... Just like the UK, London wages will be higher... And you're into marine diesels... more of those where the money is... :) I understand what you are saying... but we moved from Lincoln to Poole (Sandbanks-5th most expensive real estate in the world) and the wages here are no different to what was up North!! We will look into the area though.. what would $500k buy in Sidney?? :) |

$500k is about the average house price in Sydney... If you're looking to max your equity then Queensland is probably a better bet... Lots of fancy boats, etc on the Gold Coast, probably not so many North of Brisbane... Having said that the tourist industry in Queensland uses a lot of boats out to the Reef, whale watching, etc... Fancy Cairns, Hervey Bay...? Take a look...:D |

Aston, not getting at you but I really do not understand the mines and big wages thing. Why would someone want to emigrate to Australia and then get put into the back arse of no-where for weeks on end with daily drink and drug checks just so they can tell everyone how much they earn a week. Is it greed or just something to boast about?
For others, it's a fast-track to financial security; you spend a few years working for the mining companies, then come back to civilisation, buy a house outright with your savings, and find a job you really want. I have a mate in Perth who did exactly that. |

Believe it or not, some people genuinely enjoy working (and living) up there. WA has plenty of vibrant regional communities.

I have a mate in Perth who did exactly that. Like i said Vash i just do not understand why people would want to do this. You go through the process to uproot and move to the otherside of the world and then isolate yourself and sign up to work weeks on end without a break. Fast track to financial security maybe but what family could stick together with the sort of life that the workers are expected to live? I know these people can earn large sums of money but i hope they are aware of what they have to go through. Had an agency trying to persuade me to go to the mines, painted it as a great place to work then i found out how long i would be expected to be up there without a break. For me it was not the reason why i moved here. And after few years would you then be willing to take a large wage cut or would you be chasing the money still and making the excuse "just one more year"? Just wondering if your friend in Perth has a family and if so how does they manage? |

if someone said to me, here is a way you can pay off your morgage i and others i know would do it..i believe there is a forum somewhere, where there are loads of people moving to the other side of the world to do that very thing... life is very short ,sod the money i want to see me kids grow up.. Worked there in the 80,s installing dust extraction equipment, dust everywhere, makes Port hedland look like a paradise. Further north at Dongara there is an onshore oil/gas field, just south of Geraldton.Did the pipework from the xmas tree to the seperators to prove the field.I think it was put on hold until recently. The engineer on the job was an Italian from SA gas company (now santos I think).Only a small crew there so we camped in caravans.Once he saw we knew what we were doing he left us alone and elected himself cook.Made Pasta justa likea mama, cracking cook. His job was to drive to Dongara or Geraldton during the day to get provisions/beer,and then cook.Top bloke and a great little job. |

I think he may be on about the new mine (or reopened mine) at Boddington about an hour and a bit southeast of Perth. It's supposed to be bigger than the superpit at Kal. Gold and copper I think. I'm waiting till they start the pipework. 5 days on 5 nights then 4 days off I think. Keel |
Re: Diesel Engineer Required - Is this true ???
The whole mine thing is easy to explain !
Most rosters are going week on week off now , my roster will be this very soon , but still 2 on 1 off . This means you will get 6 months at home to see the kids n wife , do whatever it is you do . Yes looked after at work , free food and lots of it , more safety mad than anywhere you will ever work . Yes $$ good , Pluss holidays , and sick pay . I love the heat , just got back from a week of 47 + deg c :D There's a pool , gym , tennis courts , and a green for general sports , pub etc etc . Not for everyone but if your not work shy worth a go . |

Keel The construction company owner was Jeff Astle's (west brom) brother, went bust a long while back.Stayed at the pub in Pinjarra, load of Kiwi,s on the job from Whangarei gas plant (Marsden point?),memory gets a bit rusty. A boilermaker went to either boddington or Pinjarra refinery working some shift like that,4 days ,4 nights ,6 days off or something, haven't seen or heard from him for a month,I'll have to check up on him. |

Hi Phil & Chele
Fitters are very much in demand, more so as other Posters have indicated around the mines & minerals WA, Qld, SA are the major growth States for this industry. Ship building / luxury boats : Qld, NSW, SA large demand. Really comes down to your requirements, objectives for coming out to Australia to determine location (State) and then the field of work for your Skills (ie Macaky Qld big demand for Fitters, good pay, good conditions and employer of choice companies to work for.
