Deepening low off Queensland Coast
Take care on the beaches guys, the surf is rising, large waves expected end of the week, and there is a deepening low which may make things nastier still. More when I have it.....

For Thursday, SE winds 25/30 knots extending from Bowen to Double Island Point in the morning with 30/35 knot winds developing between St Lawrence to Sandy Cape during the evening. Keep your eye on the Bureau of Met site, everyone all the way down the coast. Excerpt from the link above: From late Thursday onwards the upper trough will amplify and induce a low at the surface off the central coast of Qld. This low will then move slowly southwards during the weekend while deepening and could potentially develop into a cyclone. Until it deepens no-one can now what it will do/where it will go......watch this space, but watch the BOM as well in case I'm too busy........ |

Re: Northern/Central Coast Queensland weather
Was really messy down here today. Doing VMR and watching idiots trying to take their boats out was not funny. Thankfully all but one got so far, turned round and came back in. The one (hadn't logged in) who didn't wallowed about for half an hour and then beached it next to the groyne. Don't know or care when or if he got back inside the bar. He was a twit.:frown:

Looks like we will escape the worst of it after all, looks like the low will stay off the coast (phew) but there is likely to be very dangerous surf and very strong winds. |

he Bureau of Meteorology has advised coastal communities from Bowen in north Queensland to the Gold Coast to prepare for the intense low-pressure system. Severe weather forecaster Jeff Callaghan said the system was unlikely to develop into a cyclone. "It's a different sort of beast," Mr Callaghan said. "It's more like a Sydney-to-Hobart yacht race storm. That's not to downplay it. This kind of system can be really ferocious." The system threatening the Queensland coast was forecast to be about 500km northeast of Yeppoon this morning and moving southeast. Huge waves whipped up by the system will coincide with king tides and are likely to cause the biggest tides this year. Mr Callaghan said holidaymakers most at risk would be the thousands of people camping on Fraser Island. Please take care anyone near the beaches, these waves are predicted to be seriously large, and the islands all the way down the coast are likely to be affected, including Fraser and Straddie. I heard Jeff Callaghan make the comment above in a teleconference this morning. If anyone remembers the 1999 Sydney-Hobart yacht race, with the tremendous storm that caused many deaths and lost yachts, you'll understand why it sent a chill down my spine. Stay away from the water, and lets hope the storm stays out to sea as currently predicted and doesn't cross the coast. |

Why were there still people camping there  Wouldn't you have got the fluck out of there a day or two back:unsure: One bloke on the radio was interviewed and said 'I've moved already into a more sheltered spot, I've still got a couple days of holiday left' - well stay there then but don't ask for help later :lol:

Could do some serious damage to beaches and dunes though, with the waves coming onshore. |
