Default declaring 10000 aud

hi all

i am the main applicant of a 175 visa. we are moving to brissy in 2 weeks. i've read we dont have to declare amounts less than 10000 AUD. since my dad and daughter aged 4 are also dependents does it mean each of us can carry 10 000, or is it just 10 000 for the ehole family ?

thanks in advcne

They can each carry up to 10,000 in cash without declaring it though I personally wouldn't want to have that amount of cash on me

Yeah each person can carry 10k max. What is your exact itinerary, and what are you planning to wear that day? Just for my own reference...

Just in case you don't realize...you are not declaring it to be taxed or anything like that...just a money laundering check.

Unless you came by the money by illegal means you may as well just declare it.

Doesn't the ruling say "please declare if you are carrying over $10,000"?

Carry $9999.99

And then hope you haven't got a stray 1p hiding at the bottom of your case?

I don't understand why people would want to take the risk of carrying such huge sums of money with them.

This. If you try to exchange 30 grand for Aussie $ once you're here you'll do it at tourist rates and get shafted; plus I would guess that the Bank may become a bit suspicious. My Paypal account was recently suspended pending me providing additional identity info. It's all to do with the anti money laundering laws.

You'd be far better off getting HiFx or one of those type of companies to do the transfer electronically for you. Much safer and you'll (probably) get a better rate of exchange.

Please don't stuff 10 grand in the 4 year olds teddy. Otherwise we'll see you on the next episode of Border Patrol!

Why are you carrying so much cash?

You're likely going to be stopped if you go near a sniffer dog with that much cash. It's just not worth the hassle because you will likely draw attention to yourself and be detained for further searches.
