That's right but unfortunately it will be forever. These country-bumpkin f***wits will vote to get rid of one of the best things to happen to Dullsville in years. :(

I can just see the hysteria if we finally get Sunday trading.

It is called democracy at work, and maybe there aren't enough new migrants in the area yet to be able to change the State from what it is, and from what the majority of its inhabitants like.

What I find funny is that people move to an area because they like it, then want to change it to be more like the area they came from, and then insult the other inhabitants because they want it to stay the same as they are used to.

Think about it...

I have thought about it. What about people like me who are here not because "they like it" but because they have to be.

My reasons for being here are my own. DLS is a good thing for WA. How early do these people have to get up in the mornings?

I get up at 5.30. My husband leaves for work at 6am. Even by the time he gets to work at almost 7 it is still dark just now and has been for a while. That is crap for US. I appreciate it might be OK for you but personally I would rather have my daylight in the morning. If I had a vote I would vote NO because it doesn't suit my life. Why does that make me a country bumpkin ****wit?

I guess we moved here to change things...why else did we have to jump though hoops to get here (Skills assessment) if the Aussies didn't want things to change why have immigration...just my view and I'm voting "Yes"

Best excuse I heard for not having daylight savings was that it faded their curtains and their kids were getting fat cos they were eating more, I ask you

We have just had a walk on the beach and watched a sunset at 715pm, would seem very strange it going dark at 6.15pm when its still summery :)

I'm sorry NB. I didn't mean to cause offence. You have your reasons and that's great. I was merely offering a sort of tongue in cheek observation to the WA psyche.

I'm trying to say that Aussies may call us whinging POMS, but get them on the subject of DLS and stand back as they go into whinge overload.

So true Polly. I guess I'm like you in the fact that I came here with my significant (Australian) other. They can't stand 'Broken Britain' and so have had to come home... with me in tow.

Australia isn't the worst place in the world though.

My mother-in-law actually believes that one, as she asked how we got milk in the Uk when the clocks changed, as the cows wouldn't be milked

As part of a change that first came in last year - 2008. It came apart as a result of the extension first introduced for the Commonwealth Games in 2006.

Also we now get it a month earlier at the end of September and not October.

Have to admit, I agree with ABC. It is hard though for others and you have my sympathy. But remember, it makes no odds if you have to be there. You are still living somewhere else where at the moment the majority don't want it and the democratic vote still is in place. But this might change... :-0 I think the solution is to split QLD into 2 timezones.

We've been here many times before...............but............according to Qld government polling 69% of SE Qld'ers support the introduction of DST in Qld, however they do not support the introduction of a split timezone.......it all works out rather well for Bligh to avoid the issue.

I don't buy the argument that people shouldn't be allowed to have a say in the place that they live......you could also say that Aussies moving to WA or Qld shouldn't be allowed to vote for x years as they are clearly imposing their political persuasions on the 'locals' - however one of them is defined.

It also doesn't mean that people want to change everything about a place and shouldn't have gone there in the first place......DST is a single issue, the might be otherwise very happy.

Re: Daylight saving in WA

I would have said I'd vote for it without reservation 3 years ago but now I'm not so sure.

It's great up until March and then everyone notices how dark it is in the Morning. This is a real pain as it's still lovely weather and yet it feels like winter.

Another balls up by the amatuer politians we have in WA. Why it doesn't end with summer at the last day of Feb is a mystery.

I will vote for it but Im not happy with March:thumbdown:

No everyone has to fit around me and it all has to be done my way...lol

I dont really care one way or the other on this....its an hour...that all...but as this forum proves it's easy to wind people up over it..somebody i know the other night said she cant wait to get rid of DST because when her kids are in bed (still light)they cant understand why other kids are still out playing...so i said thats the parents fault, and has jack shit to do with DST...she went right into one...hahahahahahha...easy as:p

Personally I find it one of the very big negatives about Australia...it becoming dark so early in the evening year round. There are some wonderful months for weather - my favourite time of the day is the evening, yet it's so restrictive this darkness! I really miss Northern Europe's long days.

It's not a negative for all of Australia though......just those parts that find themselves furthest east, further north and sitting right out at the eastern edge of a timezone an hour behind of everyone else on the same coast to the south......you know who you are!

In mid summer Melbourne there is usable daylight til well after 9pm.

All year round or just part of the year ?

London Mid Winter - Sunrise 8:04 AM - Sunset 3:54 PM - Length of Day 7h 49m
Perth Mid Winter - Sunrise 7:17 AM - Sunset 5:20 PM - Length of Day 10h 03m
Brisbane Mid Winter - Sunrise 6:38 AM - Sunset 5:02 PM - Length of Day 10h 24m
Cairns Mid Winter - Sunrise 6:45 AM - Sunset 5:53 PM - Length of Day 11h 07m

You may lose in Summer, but you gain in Winter...

I was all for dls but then this year couldn't wait for sun to go down and heat to drop off. I'm pregnant and I really hope I feel differently next year if it's voted in and it's just this years circumstances. . I used to love UK summer evenings but it wasn't the same temp.

Its a discussion that happens every few months - a subject dear to the hearts of many of us. Hang around a bit longer and you'll see it all over again soon.
Are you in Aus yet? If you come to Qld and suddenly find yourself with it pitch dark by 7.30 every night of ywear you might start to understand.

Probably because it wouldn't get light till nearer 7am in the morning.

eg:
Cairns: Longest day 22 Dec 2008 -
- Sunrise 5:42 AM - Sunset 6:50 PM
If you had DLS it would become
- Sunrise 6:42 AM - Sunset 7:50 PM

and Brisbane would change from:
- Sunrise 4:50 AM - Sunset 6:43 PM
to
- Sunrise 5:50 AM - Sunset 7:43 PM

You can see that the people in Brisbane would not be overely affected by the lost hour (of daylight) in the morning, but they would further north.

What some people forget, is that it is the Morning Daylight that many people are concerned about, when considering DLS.

I do however know some people that would actually be OK with DLS, but will vote against it, purely on the grounds that some others have insulted them for not wanting to change from being a morning person to an evening person.

I haven't had to get up in the dark since leaving the UK and would hate it. British winters used to depress the hell out of me and even knowing the sun will be up and out all day, still wouldn't make up for opening the curtains and seeing only dark.

The best excuses I have heard were:

1. The lobsters get confused by daylight savings time. (Lobster fishing is allowed for one hour very early in the morning and how will the lobsters know to set their rolexes forward by an hour in spring? There is a great cartoon here, but I can't draw.

2. From a solar electricity farmer (you know: those with lots and lots of huge solar panels on their land, selling the electricity to Synergy): DST is costing me money, because I lose an hour of sunlight in the mornings while we have DST. (Because the clocks go forward in spring and it looks like you lose an hour ... but there are of course the same number of hours of sunlight in the day ...)

I think both of the above are priceless. Both were from the letters page in "The West Australian".

Hadn't heard the one about solar panels, but I remember reading the lobster one. Wasn't that around the same time hat someone in WA objected on the grounds that "an hours extra daylight gives the locusts extra time to breed"?
