My brain shifts here before the time change far more than it ever did in the UK. Here it just feels physically right to start getting up earlier and going to bed earlier.
In the UK I just saw it as a pain.

No daylight saving here in WA. Having only been here a month I'm not sure yet if that's a good or bad thing. Never saw the point of it in the UK but I know there's a difference of opinion about it here. Seems odd to think there's a time difference between states in the same country

Some mobiles will do it, depends on the provider. Also it will affect some of the timings on texts - if they go via a service centre on DST then the timing will be out for the next few months.

GIVE QUEENSLAND DST NOW !!!

My network (Vodafone) always seems to get it wrong, Jen - once changed the week before it should. Best bet is to set it to manual.

Nobody told the cats the clocks were changing so we got a lie in :D

Already light prior to 5 am even with sunrise about 5.30 ish, by summer its usually gettng light around 4.15 am:eek:

Neighbours kids are often screaming in the pool by 5.30 am. Bloody hate summer in OZ, its the biggest pain in the ass IMO no matter what bit of OZ it is.

I reckon thats the biggest bonus that Tasmania has to offer..... Aussie Summers in Tasmania are fairly good... later daylight hours than anywhere else as well.

I reckon I could be tempted to move there in my latter years, just to escape the hell that February is on those, Hot, sand blast, dead, brown, dusty, fly ridden fire furnace 40 degree plus days we get here occasionally in Melbourne.

Got to admit I'm well used to the warm nights now and quite enjoy sitting outside past 1am @ 25 degrees plus drinking beer.

My aussie mother in law always wanted to move to tasmania, hated the melbourne summer with a passion, she died without doing it though as the old man wouldnt move. Probably the only thing I had in common with her was our hate of the aussie summer:lol:

Now this is where i get a little confused(not hard:rofl:)

The one thing my hubby said he missed is light nights in Summer sitting outside a country pub with friends at 9pm and still seeing the sun,

So does this mean some Australians have late night sunshine?
Something i am getting used to being without pretty quick :)
Why doens't all of Australia do it?

The sheer size of australia means you get totally different climates, time zones etc...

Plus some states have daylight saving some dont.

Eg SE qld in summer is dark by 7.15 in melb you might end up with 8.45.

Many other factors come into play too, Ive been in melb and it might be light later but the flies would stop anyone venturing out, disgusting. In qld it might be dark but no flies. Summer in OZ is harsh, not the most pleasant season at all.

Cheers for that, had guessed it had something to do with the different time zones, never thought about the flies and mozzies though:rofl: them pesky lil buggers are making a meal out of me enough without anymore rain and sunshine to encourage them:thumbdown:

Yes the further *North you go the more even the Daylight v Dark hours.... Hence Hobart, out of all the Capital Cities has the most daylight hours in the Summer and the least in the Winter.... Whereas Darwin/Cairns etc virtually stays the same all year. Those UK summer daylight hours is definitely one of the biggest things I miss living here... I love going to the UK or NHempisphere in June..... I reckon its probably one of the main things that people dont realise they are giving up.

Edit * Closer to the Equator that is.

I too love light nights. I went to Amsterdam last year with an Australian colleague and they blew her mind (the light nights, not the coffee shops).

Having lived on the equator where it gets light at 7 and dark at 7 ish every single day, I can tell you any variation is most welcome :) but it doesn't exactly change my life.

Re: Daylight saving starts tonight...

Sunset gets as late as around 8:45pm in Melbourne near the solstice (with DS time), and around the same in Hobart believe it or not (just 5 or 10 minutes later). Sunrise is around 30 minutes earlier in Hobart though at the same time.

Some people posting are exaggerating the harshness of summers down here. ;)

The summer heat and dry in places like Victoria and the SE generally is not as bad as Spain for example yet the English seem to love the climate down there probably even more than Australia.

A place like Madrid averages 31C for maximums in July which is equal or near equal to the hottest place in Victoria. Melbourne on the other hand only averages around 26C and many coastal and mountain areas only average 20C-25C in January.

Go to a place like Seville and it is as hot as the centre of AUS during summer with a 35C average July maximum, and record temps of near 47C, similar to Melbourne's record. One thing about Melbourne is you don't take siestas in the middle of the day as part of the culture. ;) It's not that hot really. Melbourne, Victoria and much of the SE of the continent gets amazing extremes of heat and low humidity on the occasional days in summer and also impressive extended heatwaves sometimes, you have to realise though that this is only on occasions and not what it is like most of the time. Also summers are quite dry down south, the flip side of this is that winters and springs are quite wet.

Nowhere in the world is paradise. Australia has a lot of flies, and in late spring to early summer you get the tiny bush flies that feed on nasal secretions and saliva. I agree they are a horrible nuisance but you get used to them. Eating outdoors here involves negotiating flies and mosquitoes. Australia is a relatively high latitude continent with most places generally in close proximity to tropical desert areas and the weather tends to be very warm in the warmer months in most places.

The landscape dries out in many places in Summer and browns off. This is in no way unique to Australian temperate areas. The same happens in many parts of the USA and many parts of Europe it may brown off as well in summer. Go look at Spain and Italy on Google street view and parts of it are completely devoid of grass in summer. Moving to a warmer climate from a very cool climate has its pros and cons and many people will decide they don't like it after all.

Each to their own.

It happens everywhere in the world in places like the States.

It's awkward that places on the same line of longitude differ in Australia.

My view is that ~8.45 (we get more light in fact than this - almost 9) in Melbourne is late enough, enough time after work, I don't need it light near 10pm - and it's lighter in winter too so I can't miss the UK situation.

I think you make some very good points about Mediterranean countries. Whilst there are parrallels with Melbourne, the fact of the matter is that Melbourne has lots of cooler days.

I suppose people can take the heat in Spain as they only go there on vacation.

In North America, there's often a difference between different parts of the same state/province.

Two parts of NSW are on a different timezone to the rest of the state, as far as I know.

The Broken Hill area in far western NSW is on the South Australian timezone which can be a bit confusing. It's an odd situation where the people of Broken Hill do not associate with NSW as they are so much closer to Adelaide than Sydney and everyone in the town has Adelaide as their local capital city. As a result everything has to be in sync with Adelaide and SA. ;)

Lord Howe Island is the other exception to the standard NSW time zone.

Got to say having only just learnt that Qld doesn't have daylight saving has really put me off moving there.

This winter in Melbourne seemed quite long and cold and I thought that a job in Brisbane might be the answer but with it going dark so early in summer it loses some of its appeal for me.

Nah - lack of DST in Brisbane is a godsend. The last thing you want is to travel home from work still in the heat of the day and have to wait an extra hour before it cools down sufficiently to wander outside away from the ever comforting air-con.

As it is in summer our dog only gets a lap of the block after about 10pm. If we had DST we'd almost have to set the alarm for middnight just to get up and walk the dog! <-- ok partly joking, but you get the point

I think it's worse having to get up and get ready for and get to work in the morning when it's already hot. My 10 minute walk from station to office would often leave me feeling like I needed another shower once I got there! I wouldn't be nearly so bothered if it was a bit hotter on the way home from work - who cares by then?

Brisbane temps, unlike Melbourne often peak very early in the day - not sure anyone would really notice the difference in the evening.

Middle of summer near Melly; civil twilight ends at around 9.15. Civil twilight is the point at which you can no longer work by natural light. I feel it doesn't get dark until 9.30 but then maybe I get a few more minutes for being a man :D

In London I only got half and hour more so I don't miss that at all.

The only problem here is that you have to keep the kids up late to see the Christmas lights. :D

That's exactly it - don't go by the times on the net - which are mostly sunset times. 9:15 is long enough in my books!

I was going to say this. But people want light! The heat is another thing.

ProudVIC Oct 3rd 2010 8:45 am

Re: Daylight saving starts tonight...

It all comes down to whether you like being woken up at around 5am to 5:30am in summer with the sun streaming in and birds calling and then not being able to get back to sleep, or whether you would prefer to get up closer to sunrise with duller light around 6am to 6:30am and have more time later in the day.

Without daylight savings you are at risk of having less sleep but also less time after work to do anything. One of the worst parts of winter is coming home in the dark and then having nothing to do but sit in front of the TV or a computer when you've probably been in front of a computer all day anyway.

It is a health related issue the way I see it, both physical and mental health.

So.... I was walking the dog along the beach today, at about 7.30pm, watching the great big orange sun setting into a very flat sea, loads of families on the beach making sandcastles, having picnics, lots of people in swimmers even at this time in the evening, it was 26 degrees and I was thinking - it doesn't get much better than this.

Yes - it was that warm. Funny how in Melbourne summer just arrives..

What makes me laugh is not the apparent temperature but the UV - winter - fairly cold and dull at times - a weekend of spring sun and above 20 temps can make the whole joint feel hot..push a mower around and boy - time for a beer!

The sky was still orange at 8pm...which tells people how light it stays in Melbourne.
