Daylight hours
Hi, could anyone tell me what parts of Oz have light evenings. I read somewhere that some parts go dark very quickly from about 6pm.
At the moment in the UK it's nice light evenings but I am just loathing the 4pm dark afternoons starting :( and want to pick somewhere that can be enjoyed in the evening as well :D |

But then you dont get the nice winters say qld would get when the temps are more what people are looking for, winter 20 - 25. Victorias one of the states with a bit of a fly problem tho (no where near as bad a adelaide or perth) but still bad enough to not really want to sit outside most evenings when its hot anyway. Swarms of flies chasing your mouth, ears, eyes, food does not exactly replicate a UK summer evening. Think the reason the hotter states dont have daylight saving is just that, too hot, aussies say by late afternoon youve had enough heat, let it get dark, in summer thats around 7 pm, cant quite fathom that tho, because in summer evenings often stay in the high 20's anyway, I suppose that is cool compare to daytime but its still sticky. Of course you have the bonus tho, its light at 4.30 am in summer  nice for the family especially if you have a couple of hyper tweenies who get up with sunbreak :D |

Re: Daylight hours
I just wonder if you would ever get used to the fact that it would be dark, or nearly dark, when you get home from work every day. When do people mow the lawn, in the dark or at the crack of dawn ??
We're looking to move to Brisbane and this could be a worry. |

Dusk - can be about 8.30 in summer, final sunset at 9pm (Geelong). Tasmania would have even longer summer days, but shorter days in winter. |

Re: Daylight hours
Just bear in mind that the further South you go - in summer - the longer the daylight hours are. So at the South pole it's daylight all round the clock. It follows that nearer the equator in round terms it gets more like 12 -12 hrs.

They have what is called "twilight" and during Summer, it's daylight up until about 9.30 ish, maybe a bit later. |

You will then need to make your own adjustment for daylight saving time where it applies. |
Re: Daylight hours
Can't say I've noticed it being a problem. Yes it gets dark early but life still goes on because it's still warm/hot. My girls have an hour and a half swimming lesson at 5:30 in an outside pool all year round - they just have stadium type lighting on the pool.
It's amazing how quickly you get used to the way of life. |

I've realised I don't care how hot it is - warm enough, and light is what I enjoy the most. I'd trade 45 minutes off a British June day for a Melbourne summer and winter. Flies or mossies not enough to warrant staying indoors on a summer's evening. I don't know anyone who would stay inside all evening due to it. |

Depends what you do, remember we all only work 2 hours a day in aus :D You often have a dip after work, however evenings shark feeding time, wouldnt catch me swimming anywhere near dark anyway. We go in the morning many people get up and surf before work even if they start at 7 am. Remember its light just after 4 am in summer. |

Re: Daylight hours
When I was back in England in June, I was constantly surprised by the amount of light in the evening. On a regular basis, I would look at my watch thinking it was about 5 or 6 pm (going by the light levels and my experience in Australia) and instead would find it was more like 9 pm!
It was lovely to have that extra light, but I wouldn't go back for that if it meant putting up with long, dark, cold winters :D |

Re: Daylight hours
I'm going to miss the long UK twilight, but think that actually having weather warm enough to enjoy evenings outside (even if it is darker) is worth it.
When I lived on the GC I would go swimming after work (up to about 7pm). |
Re: Daylight hours
Thanks for all answers, I love the long light evenings in June especially but it'll only be a month or so now and then we are back to dark morning and dark afternoons so I know where I'd rather be (visa pending of course).
 |
Re: Daylight hours
Personally I love sitting out on long hot summer UK evenings until really late with all the garden lights and lanterns on.........................................
Unfortunately there isn't that many of those! :D I'd love the thought of hot balmy evenings with the garden lights and lanterns on by about 7 or 8ish , means I can go to bed earlier! ;) :D I'm always up at the crack of dawn anyway so I think Brisbane will suit me just fine. :) |
Re: Daylight hours
Well 4 days into spring and 5 am this morning impossible to sleep as birds are so loud  because its getting light. Another few weeks and that will be happening at 4 am. Probably the most irritating aspect of life in australia.
Dont think we will get daylight saving tho, further to the silly reasons aussies have against it like extra fading of the curtains  , one woman wrote into the paper saying it will cause road accidents  another thinks we will use more water :D Too right some days I 'dont get it" :D |

Re: Daylight hours
I used to get up at about 8:00am look outside and wonder where the hell everyone was. Then one morning I went surfing at 6:00am and there everyone was - out power-walking, taking the pooch for a walk, walking into town, mowing the lawn. Got to the beach and there was about 80 people in the surf - most I'd seen prior to that had been 20 or so. So I just started changing my hours - going to bed a bit earlier and up a bit earlier. We have daylight savings here in NSW (29th of October is changeover day this year) but even then I can't say an extra hour or so's daylight in the middle of summer is of any great interest to me. Last summer we sat out every evening with a glass of something cool and it was great - didn't much like the Christmas Bugs much, but all the flies etc are easily dealt with by those zapping lights and a couple of citronella candles. :)
