Communications have been lost with Mardie station in Western Australia after severe tropical cyclone Monty crossed the coast about 9.30pm (WST) Monday.
A spokesman for the West Australian Bureau of Meteorology said the cyclone is now moving to the south-east away from the coast.
"We don't know the strength of the winds there but maybe no news is good news sometimes," he said about the situation at Mardie.
The cyclone, which is still classed as category three with gusts up to 190kph, is now heading towards the mining community of Pannawonica, weakening as it moves inland, he said.
People in communities at Barrow Island, Mardie, Onslow, Fortescue Roadhouse, Pannawonica and Nanutarra have been advised to move to shelter.
Meanwhile, Northern Territory's east coastal community between Cape Shield and Port Roper remained on alert as Cyclone Evan edged closer.
At 1am CST, cyclone Evan was centred near the mainland coast and about 45km north-east of Numbulwar, moving west at 20kph.
