Default CTP insurance and learner drivers

Hello all,

We just bought a little second car for $6k. Insurance is up on our main car so I am looking for a policy to insure both. I am clueless on this.

Our eldest is 16 and learning to drive. I am registering the new car today and have been trying to find out about CTP insurance in advance and I can see that many companies offer it. But I thought it came as standard with the rego?? Should I pick a company or is one just given to me??

Also, can anybody advise me if I can insure the 1st and 2nd vehicle as fully comp for me and hubby but 3rd party for my son? Or should I just let him drive the 2nd car only and have him covered just on the CTP??

Any advice? Please?

Thanks,
Ren

I don't know if it's the same in all states, but we live in NSW and have just put our son through his learner's license. We were told that we didn't need to insure a learner, as the supervising driver is insured, and is responsible for the learner. As far as the CTP goes, if the car has rego it will also have CTP. When you have to renew, the existing insurer will send a quote, but it is worth shopping around- there is a website that compares them all, not sure what it is though.

QLD CTP this year, for normal cars, is :

$308.00 ALLIANZ
$313.00 SUNCORP
$313.00 RACQ Insurance
$313.00 QBE
$313.00 NRMA Insurance
$313.00 AAMI

Not much difference in prices.

Do NOT just have CTP. This does not cover damage to other cars that you may cause. Make sure you at least have full third party cover.

Compulsory Third Party
Compulsory Third Party is a compulsory insurance to cover Injury to Third Parties, that must be taken out when registering a motor vehicle.

It covers the owner or driver of the motor vehicle in the event of an accident against any legal liability or obligation that they may have to anyone that they injure, it only covers personal injury, it DOES NOT cover damage to other property, cars etc

Optional extra covers can be taken out with an insurer of your choice, it can be a different insurer to the above compulsory cover if you wish.

These covers are normally either Comprehensive cover or Third party Property with Fire and Theft.

So is Full Third Party cover an option between CTP and Comprehensive?

CTP covers you for injury to a third party only, but no cover for anybody's property or your own injury.

There are several products between CTP and fully comp - you need to check with the insurance companies. There's something like the equivalent of Fire and Theft but has a different name here.

Here is a list of one insurers options, which would be pretty common with most insurers:
  1. Comprehensive Plus Insurance Comp with a few extras, hire car etc
  2. Comprehensive Car Insurance Normal Comp
  3. Third Party Fire & Theft Insurance 3rd party property damage and fire & theft
  4. Third Party Property Damage Car Insurance 3rd party property damage only
  5. CTP Insurance QLD 3rd party personal injury only - compulsory

You should have any of the options 1-4 with number 5.

3+5 is the equal to the UK Third Party Fire & Theft
4+5 is the equal to the UK Third Party only

Thanks so much for the replies. ABC Diamond you are a star

Looks like we may go for the third party property damage on the second car.

Sorry, but I have another question. I live in QLD and a friend said that if there is an accident and my son is driving, he is automatically covered by whatever insurance I have. Is this on my fully comp insurance or just the CTP? I have googled to find the definitive answer but can't find it.

They may be referring to the CTP cover, which is 100% correct, as that covers the car, with any driver.

Different insurers may have different policy rules in any State. Mine for example, even though I have specified drivers aged over 40 only, will actually cover any unnamed drivers but with an increased excess. eg: someone with under 2 years full licence would have an extra $1,000 excess. At a guess, if they were under 25, that excess may be even higher.
