Can anyone tell me if there is council tax in Melbourne and approximately how much it might be.

Yes, you do have to pay council rates once a year like everywhere else in the country, but the amount varies according to where you live and the total value of the property.

If you're renting though the landlord pays the council rates which was a pleasant surprise.

As mentioned above the rates are dependant on council and size of house. Haven't really got any idea how much, however, I was discussing costs of living UK vs Aus with friends who live in Bondi, their house is smallish Federation 2 bed place worth $700k+ and they almost choked on their beer when I told them I was paying £107 a month council tax in the UK. They reckoned they paid that a quarter so like most household bills I think you'll find it is lower here (quelle surprise!!!!)
