How about PYMBLE NSW 2073?

Close to Chatswood (but not too close)

There must be quite simply hundreds of suburbs within commuting difference of north Sydney. What are your criteria? What is your budget?

Waverton is great (that's where we live!). I can walk to work in North Sydney (20 mins) or walk 3 mins to the train station on the North Shore Line and just a few mins into the city. There are a few nice cafes, shops and a couple of restaurants, and it is on the harbour. Depending on your criteria you can get a 2 bed apartment from $650/week.
Good Luck!

That looks like a good location Andrew.

Whats the access like to beaches or the water near there? ie house with mooring/berth.

How is the train in the morning? Packed like sardines or dependant on time of travel?

Are there mainly apartments or houses?

What is your budget and requirement? By train with no stops you are looking at the North Shore line. The furth North the cheaper it gets. Go East for the beaches but that is all by bus and not cheap. Moorings will mean $$$$$$.

What is $$$$$$. in terms of:

house + view + berth

versus

house + just view

Depnds where but not my area of expertise. Maybe go west for moorings but you won't be on the train line.
