COst/time of pool maintenance
#1
CAn you give me ball part figures and time spent (or how much you pay for a service) on maintaining and looking after your pool, as well as time spent doing it.
Have seen s few houses with pools up near Byron and want to know if it's worth it for me (seeing as I will be doing it!)

For me in Sydney hardly any time these days. Maybe just 10 mins a week.
A trip to the pool shop can cost $60 twice a year for any chemicals. This summer I had to put lots of salt in because of all the rain though.
It used to be a lot more time though, we had a huge gum tree and another non-native tree cut down a year ago. After any wind or rain I would be there for ages and have to empty the basket twice a day. We also have a blanket and that helps.
Although the pool isn't used much these days, it's nice having it there, just to know I can have a dip anytime is wonderful.

I love having a pool, come home from work and jump in, have a swim before bed to cool off, just spending time around the pool relaxing.... love it! (I think it's a Pommie dream to have one, in my case)
Our pool is salt water, so just chuck a bag of salt ($7.00) in every so often and the pool looks after itself, the chlorinater uses the salt to create the chlorine, so cost is minimal.
The pump is quite expensive to run, solar power would be a bonus if the house has it? I keep thinking of getting Solar, just to run the pool all day at no cost.
Don't get the water tested as often as I should, but when I do the water is always ok and it always looks clear and smells correct, so not a problem.
We don't have a pool cover so a few leaves get blown in and dust. Once a week I vacuum it out and clean the filters etc, nice to get out of the house and get some sunshine, so not really hard work.
In the summer months (no pool blanket) evaporation is a bit of a problem (I should get one) once every couple of weeks I have to top up the water level with a hose.
Just had a lot of rain and used the excess water to back flush the filters, though always feels like a waster of water.
Our pool is concrete, my brother in law has a fiberglass which recently 'split' and large gash appeared. Cost him $7,000 to fix, though once we saw how the guy fixed it, we could have done it ourselves. (Hindsight is always good)
Friends with heated pools get longer use out of theirs than we do, same goes for fiends with pool covers, they get a least 1 month prior to summer and 1 month after summer extra use..... did I mention, I must get a pool cover!

We're in Perth too, so may be different to over East.
For time I would say 10-15 minutes a week. In summer I test the water myself once a week and take a sample to the pool shop twice a year - spring and autumn, which reminds me I should do that now the weather's turning. On Friday I turn the chlorinator up to 3 and Monday turn it back down to 2. That seems to keep the chlorine levels right. Once a week I chuck in a cup of liquid acid and that keeps the PH right. A bag of salt at the beginning of summer and maybe another in February keeps the salt ok. The old man vacuums once a week but if I'm feeling particularly lazy I'll just stick the kreepy krawly in. We do keep the cover on most of the time but leave it off if it's really hot out or else the water gets too warm.
